Is tapering off opiates worth it or is it a science?

I guess i went to hard core. I went from at least 140mg lortab down to 20 mg 3xs a day and all i am doing is crying and then screaming out loud with anger....Hhhmm ya think! So, I went on 20 mg 4xs daily and I am on 10 mg 4xs daily today. This is day 3 of taper. I am probably going WAY to fast but I am so sick of it all... I just want it over. I WANT TO QUIT THINKING ABOUT IT!

Got you. As I stated earlier, slow and steady wins the race. Please listen to your doctor. there is a reason why they provide us with these taper plans. They work!! Once we decide to do it on our own, we get depression setting in, our emotions run wild, etc. So follow the doctor and you may avoid all of that. It may not be in your time frame but it may be the best way to go. What is a few more weeks in the scheme of things?

Are you taking any minerals and vitamins?  The Thomas Recipe to the right and Amino Acid Protocol has some excellent suggestions to help with your emotions.

No I have to call my dr next thursday to get it fri. I am not calling them. I guess I am not explaining this very well. Here it goes a different way. I have 30 5mg left and I am tapering off with my dr. He wants me to do it at two - three week drops. I want to do it quicker and be done by using these 30 to do it. No more scripts. I am finding that the emotional withdrawl is the worst. Is there anything i can do to help that.

That's great!   Definitely call the pharmacy and cancel the script.  Tell them you don't want that one filled.   You can't take what you don't have.   And as long as we know they are out there, they call out to us trying to lure us back in.    The mental part is difficult, but it does get better.  Your brain has been cut off from it's feel good chemicals so the sudden drop is playing with your mind.   It does get better in a couple days or so.   Just hang on tight for the ride and know it gets better.

Call the pharmacy and cancel the script today while you still feel this way. Set yourself for success!

I have someone holding my meds and despensing them. My dr has me on a taper of three weeks then drop 5mg and so on. I had back surg 8weeks ago and i dont need them now and want off them quicker. Yes when I have them I take freely for two days then split the rest up till my next script. Which is why I have now givin them to my husband to dish out. I have been on Pain meds for appr 13 yrs.  I have had 2 types of cancer that I thankfully have beaten along with a boat load of med issues which was why I have been on them. I am now at a point where I can handle the bouts of pain I have and want off like yesterday but as we all know the mental is a not nice thing. I never realized that while I was dealing with all this medical crap I was also numb to life so I have been crying for two days over the death of my son that happend 15 yrs ago. I just thought I could do this faster was all. But thanks

So next Friday after Christmas?    If so, by then you will have been over the worst of the withdraws so you might as well NOT fill another scrip.   Like IBK says, you will find yourself eating them like candy and back in the same place again.    If you meant this Friday, do you have someone that can hold them and only give you what you need while you work out a taper plan with your Dr?

You have to make some decisions here hun. You are already going through withdrawal so what is the sense of dragging it out? If you fill that script I will bet my bottom dollar you will be eating them like candy. Tapers should never be done alone. Someone should be holding the pills. If you were able to "control" your addiction or control your usage you would be not be here. Your best thinking got you where you are right now so I suggest you go back to your doctor and ask for help. We cannot provide tapers here. It should always be done under medical supervision.

Tapering is usually done very slowly...over the course of weeks or months depending on what you are using and for how long.    Tapering was something I could never do either because if there were pills around, I took them to keep me out of hardcore withdraw.   Is your Dr going to prescribe more or is this the last scrip they are giving you?

HI if your going to taper this fast you mines as well just jump and get it over with .....with such a drastic drop in dose your really going to feel it and your going to be in a constant state of withdrawal anyway so ether slow down the taper or just C/T it and get it over with keep posting for support good luck and God bless....Gnarly

Well the dr has now dropped my med to 5 mg every 4 hrs so I am a lil higher than he thinks..... So I am just realizing that I thought I had dealt with my life pretty well until I did this. I have been having allot of flashbacks of my son dying, having cancer twice and all kinds of things that I thought I had dealt with coming at me 10000 mph!!!! But I have a Brilliant personality! LOL

Hi & Welcome,

That is not a taper--that is a jump off of a cliff! No wonder you are feeling the way you are. If you insist on tapering then do it properly through a doctor. Slow and steady wins the race...
