Is this an addition?

Is this an addition?

Hi all, so glad I found this website.  I have been taking vioprofin due to multiple surgeries and pain in my lower back over the last year.  I take 1 1/2 every night to help me with the pain of the surgeries and osterporosis.  It helps me relax and sleep and I feel ok when I wake up.  I have gone a few days without taking it and I am ok.  I have even gone on vacation and missed a few doses.  How do I know if I have an addition??

thanks,

I would not call your use of pain pills an addiction.Looks like a sensible use of pain pills. As long as it does not escalate rapidly to uncontolled doses, you are doing fine.

Well, its a bit tricky.  First welcome.  I would first ask why you question if your an addict... Its important to know that there is a difference betweeen dependence and addiction.  Dependence is your body's natural reaction *physically* to taking opiates for extended time.  Dependence on opiates will cause withdrawal symptoms if you stop suddenly.  This doesnt mean your an addict though. Addiction is a whole different animal.  There are some classic signs:  Taking more than prescribed.  Taking for reasons other than to treat real pain.  Double dosing.  Running out of your script early.  If you are taking your meds at night, as prescribed, just to deal with pain, then I cant say for sure but I would think no, your not an addict.  Most addicts would take 1.5 every few hours to treat pain, boredom and just the addict need.

That being said, if your worried, why not try cutting down to 1/night and then slowly coming off.  There are other ways to treat chronic pain with out prescription opiates.  PT, accupuncture, strength training of your lower back and stretching, hot cold packs and sometimes Advil rocks. Give it a try.  Good luck!
