Is this length of time reasonable?

by codependentmom, Oct 24, 2009 09:20AM
My daughter became addicted to pills (narcotics - variety) in 2007.  When she realized her addiction, she tried to get Saboxon illegally to help her withdraw, but she was caught by her husband before she could begin.  Lucky for her, b/c she discovered she was pregnant at almost the same time.  She began taking Methadone at a clinic immediately, and has since had a healthy, beautiful baby boy who is now almost 2 y.o.  My question is this - - - her original addiction was appx. 6 months, and never involved heroine.  She's been on Methadone and now Saboxone for over 2 years, and it looks like it could be a long time before she's totally weaned from all drugs.  Is this reasonable?  And also, she's been told that symptoms of withdrawal can take months, and even years to completely end.  Is this accurate?
Thanks!

My son has the opiate addiction and is having seizures.  The neuro psychiatrist told us that the receptors in the brain can take up to 8 years to heal and to become normal again.  They spread out in the brain during the usuage.  He also said one use, even after being clean for years, the receptors will go back to the usuage stage immediately.
This is all I know.  Hope it helps in your understanding.

Thanks all,
Lizzie Lou - - I agree!  If she hadn't been pregnant, she never would have considered the Methadone in the first place, but she was told that going cold turkey would cause a miscarriage, and that was unacceptable to her and her husband.

Momseeking - - I'll keep your son in my prayers too.  It's hard to be supportive without crossing that line in codependency, isn't it?  It's so painful to watch the struggles and suffering of the ones we love.  If I could take it away...

Holliee - Again, thanks so much!

This website and forum really helped me through a tough weekend.  It was a real "Higher Power" thing!  I am grateful!

I can see withdrawals lasting months, but I personally wouldn't say years. I've never been on methadone or suboxone but have had my issues with vicodin. I was over a year clean until my back pain came back and got back on them. Before this I was clean for a year after taking about 200mg of hydrocone a day for a little under 2 years. After about a month I felt completely back to normal and had no withdrawals whatsoever. The worst of the physical withdrawals were gone in about a week. Once the 2 week mark came around I just had a little bit of anxiety and my sleep was starting to get back on track. I can see the mental part lasting years but that is why aftercare is so important. Like I said, I have no experience with sub or methadone but know it is tougher to get off of. I'm sure someone will come along and give a little more insight on it. Best of luck to you and your daughter. With the proper support system and aftercare she can get off these meds for good! I'll keep you and your daughter in my prayers!

Ok I want to see if I read this right---She was using pills for 6mths? ( are you sure only 6mths kids do not tell parents everything) When she was ready to come off she found out she was prego?  If this is true then I think for sure she has been on the methadone for tooo long.  Really yall should have just locked up the pills for her and put her on a taper schedule.  Doctors give rx for perc and tabs all the time to prego women.  A six mth habbit I am going to assume she was prob taking less then 10 pills a day? Methadone and sub should be used as a last resort.  I do not know what her drug of choice was but it seems to me that she jumped from the pot into the fire.  Methadone and Sub are very, very hard to come off of. She could have been on a taper schedule and done before her 6th month.  Then baby could have come out with no wd or having to decrease methadone.  I think that would have been better for baby and her.  Unless I missed something and she was taking 30-50 pills a day or she was using h or something like that.
Good Luck
Sending my prayers

WOW terrible...Do docs give meth or sub to anyone that wants it? Really i dont know, i have never did either, do they interview you to make sure you aare a good canadate? or do they just give it? I can not even beleive meth for a 6 month addiction, i mean she should have just quit, her w/ds would have been very mild, and now a 2 year meth/sub habbit, now she is dealing with the devil, To anser your question about time , i guess your asking if its been long enough for her to come off? if so..YES , its been to long. Good luck to you and her, if you need anything PM me, Lee
