Just added SAM e to my amino routine. WOW!!!

I'm on 4 months clean from oxy/lortab and have been having ongoing anxiety issues that come and go.  Calssic PAWS stuff.  I originally tried the whole amino protocol sort of as an all at once thing and didn't like it at all.  I think it was just oo much all at once for my system.  I gave up for a bit but then decided to try getting back into it one amino at a time and seeing if the gradual effect was more positive.

First off i take plenty of vitamins and try to eat a decent amount of healthy protien.  Never a bad thing anyway.

I started with 5-htp and had good results but they were not consistent.  Some times great relief sometimes none at all.  I've since learned from another thread (sorrry forgot your name) that this is typical because your body basically "decides" to use it or not.

I then went to L theanine which also gave nice benefits but didn't quite take the all the edge off the anxiety.

Today before lunch I added SAM e.  I'd read that it was fast acting but WOW!  It's like taking a xanex without the drowsiness.  I mean this is the best I've felt in over a week.  Like I said these things are different for everybody so pay attention to how they effect you.  But right now my anxiety level is definately down to barely noticable levels.

I've read a few amino threads this week and just thought I'd add a little personal experience.

I tried SAM last year. It tends to give you diarreah. Just be careful of that.

You can get all of this stuff on line or at GNC stores if there's one in your area.  I was actually at aWalgreens today and they had 5-htp and sam-e on the shelf so look around if you don't have a GNC near you.

This is a cut and paste from the "Amino Protocol" over on the right side of the screen under "Most Viewed Health Pages"  The complete page is over there but here is a clip of it:

5HTP-- this is what tryptophan gets turned into prior to being turned into serotonin in our brains. Serotonin is what is usually depleted if we are depressed and anxious.. Taking this will help with PAWS ( post accute withdrawl syndrome) or eliminate you suffering from them all together      DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE TAKING A SSRI OR TRICYLIC ANTI DEPRESSANT
Dosage-- up to 300mgs a day 3x DAILY ( I take 100mgs 3x per day, start with the lower dose and move up if needed)

L-glutamine--amino acid required for GABA production, that is the relaxing part of our brain.    up to 2000mgs 3x per day.. ( I take 1000 mgs 3x day, again start lower and work up if needed)

L-Taurine-- another "relaxing" amino  up to 1000mgs 3x daily

DLPA-- helps restore the function to the pain receptors working with the enporphins/enkephalins, can also help with pain if you are someone that suffers with some kind of legitamate pain. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE TAKING A SSRI OR TRICYLIC ANTIDEPRESSANT or if you have DIABETES or HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Dose-- up to 2000mgs 3x per day (again you can start lower like 1000mgs 3x daily)

Sam-e-- aids in stress relief, depression, eases pain, and produces antioxidant effect that can improve the health of the liver 200-400mgs per day.

If you find yourself really struggling with energy after being on the aminos you can add L-tyrosine to the mix in the early part of the day.. up to 1,500mgs..  This is not usually used in the treatment of pain pill addiction and can over stimulate some people I would say only take it if you are still struggling with energy after starting everything else..

As far as sleep.. in my early days off of pills I took a sleep blend from GNC with a L-theanine and calcium magnesium liquid everynight and slept like a baby.

Hey man i just read your post and i sure could use some help in the anxiety area! I mean it is getting pretty old fast! i really want to get rid of this or atleast cut it back alittle.
The whole amino thing is really is confusing. What is the best way to go about the SAM e thing. If you could can you keep it simple!! i would appreciate it i`m not sharp but i am 28 days clean.........Thanks Man      brad

green eyed lady -  I am not sure still..lol.  I think they do the same thing so you would want to use one or the other.  If you used both you would get too much seratonin.

This is all new to me so it gets confusing.  I will look to make sure.

I just started the amino acid protocol this afternoon...lol...

So you CANNOT take the 5htp and SAMe together? Or can we?

That is wonderful for you!   It is things like this that truly make a difference in recovery IMO.

As you know, I have been taking the 5htp (100mg per day) for the past two days and I can see a difference.  I bought 5htp and SAM e several weeks ago thinking that we needed both but didn't realize they were for the same thing.  Anyhow, I might take that tomorrow instead of the 5htp and see which product I like better.

Take care! Lyn
