ADDICTION: SUBSTANCE ABUSE COMMUNITY
Just for thought

Just for thought

Just some information...

Afetr a long heartwarming discussion with my father who is heavily addicited to crack cocaine, I thought I would share this with you all..........

My dad is a great manipulator. Can talk the talk and make everyone think he is walking the walk. Real good at making people believe him and real good at creating scenarios to support his lies. However I am sure most people who have shared in his addiciton struggles have mastered "misinforming" as well. Anyways, through our discussion he explained to me that treatment centers were full of s**t and that they just take your money. Well, having personally worked in the mental health field I gave him this info that I hope someone would like to know...otherwise I am just rambeling which I do do often. In a treatment center there are those people who work there and those people who come there for treatment. Of those people who come there for treatment there are those who are there to save a relationship, ususally a marraige, there are those who are there because they have been court ordered, there are those that are there walking through the steps just checking out the place to see if they are ready for life post addiciton, and there are those few who are truely devoted 110% to recovery. I explained to him that from the moment a person seeking help walks into a treatment center they are being evaluted and assessed. Yes before they put you in the room and do the intake paperwork and before you meet with the dr, you are being evaluated. In those first few minutes to an hour, you are mostly figured out...that is are you there to keep your wife, are you there to beat jail time, or are you there to make a differance in your life. And like I explained to my father all of the tools are there. Yes there are some counselors that are better than others, just as there are some plumers and some mechanics who are better than others, but again the tools are there. The counselors are trained to recognize and to disect the persons coming in to seek assistance. There could be a facility full of 50 people and perhaps only 1 wants to make a differance. That one will recieve the help and the other 49 will recieve the b.s. of the motions the state says the counselors have to do to keep the facility open and their paychecks coming in. That is a fact! Rules we learn in a theraputic environment as a staff member....We will never work harder on your therapy and recovery than you will, Your time here is what you make of it. Your are in charge of your fate.
It is easy to control what happens within the walls of  a treatment facility but it is those who have made positive advancements towards changing their life while in the center that will suceeed once back in the reach of temptation and influence of others.

Thought I'd share........Good luck to all of you with all of your struggles

You hit it right on!   I don't think I've ever read a more detailed description of the rehab process and the expectations of both counselor and client.  IT is so true that there absolutely MUST be a desire to recover in order for recovery tobegin.  We can't do it for others, although regaining relationships can certainly be our inspiration.   If we don't have the desire but WANT to Want ot quit..................pray to whatever you believe in and ask for the desire and willingness to act on it.

Thanks for your post.
