by Shattered, Aug 06, 2007 12:07PM
Is this o.k.? Can someone shed somelight on taking both L-TYROSINE and an SSRI? I was told by a doctor this was fine but a just read a post saying its not..Help! I plan on doing a taper and then adding L-TYROSINE  ( but I am on Luvox ..SSRI).. I heard L-TYROSINE  is essential in fighting the lack of energy ect..

Well I am under the impression that its a big no no.... There are other things that can help with energy.. Like a 100mg B vitamin complex and subligual B 12 on its own ... I didn't take L-tyro  when I quit..  It can somtimes give people the 'coffee jitters" so I avoided it.. I am sensitive to speedy things.

Crapola, I thought the 5-HTP was the only thing not to take if you are on SSRI's.  I only took L-Tyrosine once, and it was twice in a day, 500 mgs each.  So, a total of 1000 mgs.  Do you know why they shouldn't be taken together?

Yes, you don't want to increase serotonin too much when you are taking something like a SSRI since they take what serotonin you have a recycle it.. It causes serotonin syndrome which can be nasty.. Since you only took it once I would not worry about it.. It usually doesn't affect anyone right away..
No 5HTP, no L-tyrosine and NO DLPA  these do not mix well with SSRI's or tricyclic antidepressants.

When I wake up I take 500 mg of L-tyrosine to start my day off right. then after about an hour and a couple of cigs I take 20 mg of Fluoxetine with a cup of coffee. that usually goes with a B-complex + C timed release multi-vitamin. throughout the day I also manage to pump anywhere from 100 - 300 mg of 5-htp into my body. This combination works well for me. I feel awake, active and happy throughout the day. Then, by night, when the 5-htp has been converted, I feel relaxed and ready to sleep. After about 8-9 hours of sleep I feel fully rested and actually have the desire to wake up and begin my day.
Before I began this dangerous combonation of SSRi and endophins, I was a wreck.
I had no will to live a daily life.
I felt miserable every waking hour of my day.
The only activities in my life that were satisfying were eating and sleeping. I would sleep as long as my schedule would permit me to.
Some days I would sleep for as long as 16 hours, although I have slept for over 24 hours in the past. This lifestyle caused me to quit my job.

THANK YOU FLUOXETINE, 5-HTP and L-TYROSINE. (can't find DLPA)

without you I would still be a heap of worthless **** festering in bed for hours on end.

Now lets just hope I don't get serotonin syndrome and overheat like a raver on a Saturday night.

You are risking serotonin syndrome which can be fatal .This is not a risk worth taking it wont matter how you feel if you are not around anymore .either cut out the AD or take only the AD but do NOT mix the two.

I'm taking l-tyrosine in a supplement for adrenal support, along with Cymbalta (a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant). Your posts got me googling a bit. :)

The website www.neuroassist.com has a section on serotonin syndrome that might interest you other posters. It lists the three types of symptoms that must be present for a diagnosis of true serotonin syndrome and some common misconceptions about the condition, including this:

"There is no reports in the medical literature of nutrients 5-HTP, tyrosine, levodopa, or cysteine when taken with or without drugs causing serotonin syndrome. Contrary to the urban legends posted on the internet use of 5-HTP, tyrosine, levodopa, and cysteine alone or in combination with any drug, including MAO inhibitors, does not cause serotonin syndrome.  End of discussion."
