Lady Sundown, I have a question about Elavil

Lady Sundown, I have a question about Elavil

Hi dear.  I haven't been taking the Elavil very long, but I was wondering if it made you hungry.  You said you've taken it for years so I thought you would be the one to ask.  I have been so hungry, especially for sweets, and I wondered if there was any correlation?  Just what I need, another addiction, food!
Love,
Yoda

My wife took elavil for awhile and it makes you hungry and causes weight gain. She stopped taking it after about 6 months. She told me that any amitriptyline will cause the hungries and weight gain. Sorry to burst in on your post.

Hi Lady Sundown, I hope all is well with you.

I have taken Elavil before and I craved chocolate like you would not believe.  I did not gain much weight fortunately.  Weight has been one of the few things I have been able to control over the years.  Amazing I can control anything! lol

I have been on elavil for all these years and haven't gained any weight BUT it definitely has a side effect of weight gain and sweet tooth. I do think it increased my love for chocolate, but no weight gain. If that happens I would make sure I was put on something else. I'm very lucky to have adapted to elavil with no unwanted trouble.
Wish I had better news for you.
Hugs........Connie

Not all tricyclics will cause wight gain or cravings for sweets. It happens to some but this is not an especially common side effect with amitryptiline (elavil) or any other tricyclics. It can happen with any drug that increases serotonin, norepi., and dopamine (which are A LOT of drugs). You started taking elavil about a month ago didn't you? Or was that when you got the prescription and you are just starting to take it now? With most medications you have to give certain side effects a chance to work themselves out. Especially with drugs that are antidepressants, it can take a few months for your body to adjust to the medication and often times some of the side effects will subside.
