Liver Enzyme Question

by Bernie1791, Jan 23, 2009 12:53PM
Hello,
I had a blood test taken recently for my thyroid and all numbers were "normal".  I told him to also test anything he could while we were at it since I've never had a blood panel taken before.  All other readings along with my cholesterol, blood count, etc  were fine as well but he told me my liver enzyme count was 88 and that he would retake another blood test in 6 or so weeks.  He did not seem to concerned about it.

In my late 30's and about 50 pounds overweight.  I admit that I love wine and will have a glass or two each night with that going higher on some weekends.  I take no other medications than birth control, I do smoke (which I'm planning to stop) and take the occasional ibuprofen.  I've also been the roller-coaster dieter for the past 10 years with good success when I tried.

The day before the blood test I just had finished up a all-natural seven day "Body Cleanse" vitamin regimen the day before the blood test but I had had some wine the night before the test.    I'm wondering if any of these factors (besides wine) could have raised my level?  I've also heard that my being overweight could cause the enzyme levels to rise.

Is 88 a number to be highly concerned about?  Exactly, how bad is the 88 number?  I have just started a diet program and am gradually lessening my wine intake to hopefully zilch and want to stop smoking also.

They test for two liver enzymes initially - cant recall initials (spgt is one...) - - your number is not huge .... more comprehensive liver panels may be done if necessary. Doesnt sound like thats the case. Smoking is very positive to stop - but not as hepa deadly as many other things. For a really serious situation you would have two sets of even higher numbers....and thats not a terminal thing, just something to look at and possibly have addressed. The liver is a really vigorous organ. I have been fighting liver disease for 13 years. Even did a full year of chemo at Mayo ...... slow the wine down ... stop smoking...listen to your Doc - - and relax as much as you can - - remember that every pill you take goes through your liver  ...... whatever it is..be friendly as possible to your liver ..... and best of luck to you ..
