Mangee, I need your help

Hey, I posted a few days back.  My mom's husband (80) fell down a few stairs backwards on my uncles yacht.  They did ct and xrays and found nothing broken.  He has now been on pt and massage.  Also, 10 refills for 180 10/325 and 30 oxycotin.  He just last week and a steroid injection in his back but is still having a lot of pain.  What's going on.  I'm in the body of a 30 year old.  He is now trying to walk a bit a few times a day. But more disturbing is the weight loss and he looks gaunt in his cheeks.  It's happened so fast.   What can we do.  I talked to my mom about the pain meds and she has been a real nazi about them.  So I don't think he'll wind up in your boat.  Thanks to you.  When I found out about all the meds. I thought of you and cut it off before it got bad.  Any advice would be great.  I'll check in for your reply.  The drama here seems to still be at a fevers pitch.

I had no intention of returning to the forum this quickly but your cry for help couldn't be ignored. On regards to Oxycontin.... It is a very addictive substance. This comes from my own experience not to mention other side effects  Oxy causes weight loss, sleepiness, loss of appetite and unsteadiness when you walk. In your father's case the shock of the fall may be his problem or it could be nerve damage which is hard to detect .  If, as you say, he has had a complete examination xrays and such, I think the next move is to get your doctor to recommend a neurologist in case of nerve or possible brain damage. The sooner the better.  Hope this helps

Further to my last post, age may have something to do with it also. At our age any type of accident can be traumatic. Talk to him , talk to him a lot. Do not keep him cooped up, get him outside where it is bright and sunny.  Keep him focused on life and not his mortality. Sometimes when accidents happen, especially at our age, we think we hear the flapping of angel's wings and that can put us into a depressive state. This, I have once had experience with, so I know what I am saying. Good luck.  I will be reading here but I am taking my leave for now and will not be answering for a while.
