Morphine

The long term effects of Morphine sulfate on the overall health of the human body. Including heart health, gastro-intestinally, and other organs. I know someone who has been taking it for at least at least 10+years. I am getting worried about this person. A few years ago he had a very bad stomach problem, and they could never figure it out. I pretty much thought it had something to do with the morphine. Any advice? He needs it for his back. My view is morphine is probably better than any other of the narcotic analgesics because it is the most natural and has been around for centuries. I certainly would not want him on oxycontin or fentanyl. Is Opana ER any better? Need advice from doctor preferably or someone who has an idea what they are talking about regarding this matter.

I am a paramedic so i have a good experience in t jhe medical field. But ur answer to ur question oxycontin and morphine are the same thing. They are in the same family. They also have the same ingredients but the only thing is oxycontin is a little bit stronger then morphine.

I recently started having extreme back pain had a MRI and I could not believe how bad my back is l4 and l5 is sitting on my nerve of s1 I have been taking MS Contin 60 milligrams for 5 years now from an accident in the surgery room. I take percocet 7.5 - 325 and it does not touch my pain. I called my doctor and he suggested ibuprofen 800. I took one when I was in extreme pain level 10 and my pain was gone within an hour completely gone. I made the decision to get off of the morphine and the percocet because in all reality they're not helping me at all. I take meloxicam at night and ibuprofen about 2 hours before bed and a few hours in the morning after I wake up. This takes my pain away. I had an injection and it hurt me so bad for 9 days straight I could not even move the pain was that intense. So I am sticking to ibuprofen 800 and if I feel I need more in the middle of the day I have a pill cutter and I cut them in half it still takes my pain away. I would encourage you to talk to your doctor about this I don't know how bad your back is but I know mines a mess. I hope this works out for you and that you're able to be pain free so you can get back to living your life.

Morphine does cause nausea but I would be looking for other causes for bad stomach problems. This is for Deb who posted below. I have been on 120 mg morphine daily and norco for over 10 yrs, I have only had to use a laxative once. And that was because I had another surgery and didn't get proper exercise. Sounds like you were DOPED up if you can't remember things. If so I'm sure you weren't eating healthy or getting enough exercise. Same with your belly. You can't blame that on morphine. Sounds like you need a cleanse, antioxidants, probiotics, fiber and exercise. You can either blame the morphine or do the above and feel better. Excuses don't help, action does but only you can make that choice, If that doesn't work you may have an actual medical problem

Hi,
I am curious about the tolerance issue you are speaking of.  I have had a terriible problem with tolerance from opiates and analgesics ever since I was a was a child.  So, when my Spondolylosthesis started rearing its ugly head and the debilitating pain began I had to get on meds.  I have been on Methadone for the last 7 years and my Dr. wanted me on a "cleaner" medicine.  He switched me to MSContin 30mg 2x and Vicaprofin 10mg 4x daily.  Well, I am on the 14th day and I have to say the the MSContin has NO relief for my pain.  Even when I shattered my leg skiing and I was in the hospital on a MorphinePatient button drip, it did nothing. Does anyone have this  problem of Morphine drugs not having ANY affect on pain for them?  I don't even feel the side affects and I am still going through the DT's from the Methadone.  At least the Methadone kept my pain at bay so I could function.  I want to call my doctor, but I don't know if a different med like Oxy, or maybe even jumping over to something other than an opiate like demerol.
Any ideas or suggestions? I would also like suggestions on expediting my cleansing of the Methadone from my body although I would love some relief from this chronic pain.
Thanks for any help
Zoor

you must not realize how much pain certain people are in! i have psoriatic arthritis, joint desease and severe neck and back pain to the point i cannot function without pain meds every part of my body from morning to night hurts like hell,so dont compare people with disabiltys to herion attics please i have been taking 30 mg morphine for a year and will not even consider incresasing the dose till i have to,plus i went 50 years of my life free of pills,so pllllllleeeeeeaaaasssseeee dont compare sick people to herion attics, they have a choice,we dont!!!! And yes their a opiate,no **** thats what thier made for, pain!!!!! If your not in that much pain, you shouldnt be taking them, but unless you,ve experienced the back pain you talk about, how do you know what medication someone should be taking

Hi sorry to chime but Im on Oxys for about two years now.  I actually thought they were pretty natural and preferred them to say  Ibuprofen or paracetamol
I however have tried to ask my doctor to put me on something that will reduce my tolerance but they refuse as it is dealing with the pain.  Anyway thats why Im posting to say that I recently read studied confirm wine can actually reduce ones tolerance.  I have since tried to remember to take a small glass before my dose.  If anyone likes I will post again with the results ok?

Yeah, i'm in the same boat kinda. On and off for a few years. Anyhow, do you guys feel sober if you have to take it everyday and not really even get high? I mean if you get high even a little, do you consider yourself "sober" in the sense that it is making you "normal" per say?

Yes morphine definetly messes with the stomache...I've been prscribed it for 4 years and i have a bloated belly all th etime....before the morphine I was thin, no tummy to speak of and now I look pregnent.....it also makes time fly....I can't believe the last 4 years have flown by and if you were to ask me what I did I couldn't tell you, except for the really big events...doctors way way over prescribe it....I remember my doctor telling me it doesn't harm any of hte organs.....well maybe not the organs, but has wrecked havoc on htis gal....

I am so ready to go ont eh suboxone and try to taper that as fast as I can within reason..say 6 - 8 weeks....thanks everyone who has posted on it as I've learned so much.

But ya your friends stomach is definetly due to the morphine...well it does constipate, and now I need laxatives at least every 3rd day....waht a life....  I want mine back...do we ever get it back?

I'm praying

The opana is just continuous release morphine....might be easier on the gastro issues, though. Morphine can mess your stomach up.....I can testify to that -

Not exactly like alcohol.. But it is more natural than per say ... oxycontin... in that it is in no way shape or form synthetic or semi-synthetic, and there aren't very many filler ingredients.. besides morphine and a few sulfates/colors. Also more natural than all of the other narcotics, percodan, percocet, endoset, loratab, vicodin, these have other unnatural substances that do not exist in nature, i.e. acetaminophen etc. And when abused, these drugs can cause all sorts of problems with the liver and so on.

If u would like to talk with a doctor....the doctor prescribing them would be a good place to start...I am sure the side effects are similar to any narcotic used long term ...googling it is always an option as well....that is what i do to find information when i need it

It's funny.....30 year ago.....before i was born, or course......Morphine was only giving to patients who were dying and today the doses doctors are prescribing or back pain or whatever is a crime.  More natural as in what?  heroin is heroin......thats what all of these pills are......just different strengths.......

I m sure there are long-term effects....depending on how much is being taken ....and all that......I would try a google search.  I would normally do it for you, but i am draggin a$$ mentally and physically today.........oiy!

Good luck.......

Luv,
Nutay......

There are no doctors on this forum. There may be some here that will know about long term Morphine effects. Have you tried Googling it?
