My doc won't prescribe clonidine.

I don't know what the big deal is but I called her today to come clean and I told her I've been running out of my script too early from using too much and told her I wanted to stop taking hydrocodone and that I did research and how clonidine is suppose to be so helpful etc. Well she said all she could do was write me a script for 20 vics 5mg so I could wean down WHAT?????? That will last like 2/3 days. So know if I get real pain their is always going to be this issue of my addiction and she didn't  even prescribe the clonidine. I am so mad........I did fill the script because today was my first day of w/d's and I already feel horrible so I'm going to put it off till tommorrow since my husband will be home all week to help with the kids. I have to go camping on Friday I hope I can get my strength up by then, last time I w/d it was really bad and really long.

If I really hurt myself and am in real pain can my doc refuse to help me in the future?

yes your doctor can refuse to help you...when i was trying to come clean i just about was thrown out of my docs office he refused to help me, but he was also the one who prescribed them to me, so needless to say i was PISSED OFF...so i tried another doctor, made an appointment with him, had a long discussion with him (nothing but honesty) then he says "sorry, cant help you, i am not liscenced to help addicts"...my 3rd attempt was the only doc in our area that actually beleives addiction is a disease, and he helped immensly, i forever owe him my life and my husbands too, he helped both of us (and he is not liscensed to treat addiction, just a really caring doctor who is now our family doctor FOR LIFE, i will NEVER go to another doctor, only him),,,,  just check around, eventually you will find a doctor that is real in his quest to help people with all kinds of diseases, addiction included...you need a doc who isnt AFRAID to help people... and i totally agree with savas, if you dont receive any services, DONT PAY....

Some doctors are just asinine when it comes to this stuff. It's not like clonidine is new age stuff. It's been used safely for years upon years for the easing of withdrawals in opiate addiction. This doctor sounds like a real piece of work. You come to him looking for an out to this ****, and he prescribes more of the drug you're addicted to. I suggest you try another doc. You could even try the ER if you can. They should prescribe the clonidine. Did you have an underlying condition that would make him not prescribe the clonidine like high BP? I have high blood pressure and my doc prescribed it anyway. Geez, this makes me mad and I didn't even have to go through it.

Yes, absolutely. Once a doctor knows your an addict, they generally won't prescribe legitimate medications for you. In a sense, this isn't unreasonable, since they're license is at risk. But in terms of being a decent human being and not a money grubbing pill pusher he should work with you.

You have to realize that your doctor may be in over his head. He might not have any experience or knowledge in dealing with detox. And now that you've confessed, he's just scared.

Most addicts have two doctors, one that get pain meds from who doesn't know about there addiction, an other who does know and treats it, and nare the twain shall meet!!! (DON'T let either know of the other!!!)

You'll need to find a doctor who does treat accordingly. Because this one sounds like he's going the traditional route of waiting to see how much you suffer, then trying to medicate you as little as possible so as to protect his *ss.

Call about and ask the doctor straight out if he'll help, tell him what you need. Refuse payment if he sees you and then screws you. Tell him you'll take him to small claims court over the bill for trying to charge without providing service. You may not get anywhere, but who knows? Unfortunately, your in a bad situation because of attitudes towards addicts right now (they have NO rights).
DON'T go with methadone maintenance or suboxone if you can avoid it. It's just their way of making money off you, and you'll be so hooked you may never get off.

I've got a thread called "Methadone detox: What works, what doesn't" On here. Check it out. There both opiates and the treatments are essentially the same.
