Needing help/support getting off Suboxone

Hello, I am wondering if I just quit taking my sub c/t how long I might b sick? I have sucessfully tapered from 24 mgs per day down to 12mgs per day, I have read on here where people get withdrawal from jumping off @ 2mgs so I'm wondering even if I get to a lower dose there is still a chance for w/d. I just want my life back, I've been on sub for 8 months & my life still revolves around pills every day, it *****! & more expensive then my DOC was! I'm ready 2 b opiate free. Is it harmful to jump off @ 12 mgs? I would ask my doctor but he has already told me he wants me on it for @ least a year. (he wants my $180 a month for a year basiclly) if anyone out there has any advise PLEASE help!

Hey there,

I wish I had some good news for you, however 12mgs of sub is a pretty hefty dose to jump from.  With that said, its not that it cant be done, but I assure you it wont be pleasant.

I jumped off of sub at 3mgs around 170 days ago.  3mgs is actually a pretty high dose with regards to suboxone cessation.  While the withdrawals were far from pleasant, they certainly werent the worst.  The nasty thing about sub is it takes FOREVER to wd from.

I would say about 2 weeks of a rough time, and another 2 weeks to get back to about 90%.

Personally, I would decrease down a bit lower.  You will still go through a wd process regardless, but it will be far milder for you.  Its a personal decision.

Best of luck, and keep us posted!

Henry

Your doc wasn't as expensive as the sub but how stable is your life now compared to when you were using your doc? If cost is a big reason why you want to get off the sub what is stopping you from switching back? Hopefully during the past 8 months you were able to get to the core issues of why you were abusing your doc. If not, how can you be sure you are ready to get off of sub?
With sub most don't notice any withdrawals until they start dropping down below 4mgs. Instead of just going cold turkey off of 12mgs why not do a fast taper down to 4mgs and then slow the taper down a bit from there? From what I understand 4mgs of sub will block 96% of the mu receptors. With that being said you shouldn't really have any physical withdrawal symptoms dropping down to 4mgs but mentally it may be a different story.
Just an idea.

I think u henry & bm r right, I think I will get 2 a lower dose first then think about jumping off. Sometimes I just get upset with the fact that I chose 2 b on the sub in the 1st place. Bm yes my life is better now without my DOC through counseling & the AA 12 step program I have been able 2 get 2 the core of my addiction issues. I am ready in my mind 2 get off sub I trust myself not 2 go back 2 my DOC, I just need 2 realize getting off sub will take a little more time. I think I will do 8 mgs 4 a week & then drop 2mgs eack following week till I get to that magic #4mgs & then go real slow from there. Thank u both 4 the info.

Jumping off at 12 mg of sub is like jumping off of a whole buincha opxy or hydros///not recommended but do-able
tapering slowly off this powerhouse of a narcotic is the way most folks go///but tapering is hard...sub can become a DOC for some////woulda for me and why i didnt use it when I quit///the sub out did 100 mg of hydro with only 2 mgs!  I was set for the day and used it when I was low on hydros///course I got it from a friend//coulda easily become my DOC

Thing is WD will or may not set in for 2-3 days due to the long half-life of sub
Folks really dont need to dose daily on sub///they do tho cos of their mind set of taking pills to feel better///and this is sumpin an addict has to overcome

Sometimes when u r ready it is best to seize the moment///but jumping off at 12 mgs may be tough///sub wd can be longer than other narcotics except methadone which is bout equal in half life//but 12 mgs of methadone is nuttin compared to 12 mgs of sub

Play it by ear////I wish u luck////talk to your sub dr as well///if u feel u cant make it go back and taper with his help//may even require a friend doling it out to you daily

tapering is tough for an addict//and sub is no different in most cases
sounds like your mind is made up to get off that sticky stuff..so u will  (:
