Nicorette Gum

I quit smoking a couple of times but now I haven't smoked in about 6 years but I haven't been nicotine free.  I'm so stuck on Nicorette gum and now they've made it in many new flavors and it taste a lot better than it used to.

Nicorette gum:  I want to quit this gum cold turkey since I'm tired of wearing out my jaws chomping on it and seeing all that money just chewed up.

Question:  Would this be like quitting cigarettes and do you suggest a patch and how long before the nicotine is out of my system? What withdrawal symptoms might I experience?  

I did stop Nicorette one time a few years back and chewed sugarless gum (this lasted about a year) but I would chew like 5 pieces at a time,  these big cuds of gum, I felt like a cow.
