Nicotine and morhpine withdrawal

I am 68 years old and have detoxed myself from 180mg a day of morphine to 45mg a day by 15mg a month.  It has been very hard and now Saturday morning I went for laser treatment to stop smoking (today is Monday)...It is a waste of money because I am going through terrible withdrawal symptons more so from the nicotine than the morphine.  I guess what I'm asking is how long does the nicotine withdrawal take?  I just starting feeling the discomfort last night at 2am when I could not sleep.  My legs are very restless and can't keep them still.  I am sick to my stomache but I don't have a desire to smoke.  I have asked Jesus to do this with me.

Hi Judith,
I just quit smoking a few days ago, too, and I am having w/d symptoms, but nothing like w/ding from the painkillers...I had RLS wicked bad last night, but it's gone today...I have a little headache and some anxiety, and cravings, of course, but it's not bad. I am still able to go about my daily activities as usual. Maybe your w/d's, if they are really bad, are from the Morphine w/d?? I hear ya, though...quitting smoking is hard!!! But it's so worth it! I got sick of having to hide from my son when I smoked a cig because I never wanted him to see me or be around the smoke, and it was just more of a pain in the ass than anything else!!

Jesus is the best start.  At 68, (I'm over 50) we don't heal as fast as we used to and morphine slows even that to a crawl.  We didn't get dependant in a few weeks so it's going to take time.  Keep your levels of nicotine up with the gum if you can or ?? but don't do everything at once, (my suggestion)... because if you're anything like me you'll get discouraged and rock again.  Hey, you've started the process... my hat's off to you!

Hey Judith -

I quit smoking five weeks ago to the day.  I quit once before but only for about a week.  I don't know if you've heard of the drug Chantix but it's fairly new and I think it made the difference in my quitting smoking this time.  The last time I tried to quit smoking I actually broke out in hives and was unable to sleep.

This time I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms with the Chantix. I don't know if this is an option for you but I had a great experience with it.  On the downside the Chantix is hard on your stomach and will cause naseau but it you hang in there it will pass.

Right now I'm weaning myself off of painkillers and we'll see how that goes :)

Don't know if this helps but I thought I'd let you know..........
