Opiate Withdrawal and my research

I would like to first off say i did not relapse on opiates.  HOWEVER i ended up taking some tramadol after a few surgeries.  I asked for NON OPIATE pain relief afterwards.  That is what he gave me.  I took them did not get high i thought that was great! However a few months later i found myself dependent on it without the high its a stupid drug.  So i gradually cut back..i went back to my doc and told him it was not easy to come off of and could he help me.  He gave me a taper plan to work so i started working it.   I noticed as i reduced my dosage is was worse and worse like usual.. So i do smoke pot from time to time and the last time i got off subs Marijuana really helped me get off.

I remember you. You were not very nice to the many people that were willing to go the extra mile to help you.

Learn from your mistakes as we all should or have. (not me) Surgery and sickness is not an excuse, if for no other reason than I already used it and I was wrong.

Drowning out our feelings is not any way to live our lives. Please pay closer attention to all these wonderful folks that already paved a path for the two of us and many others. They speak from wisdom, knowledge, experience, and  first hand history.

Hi......well dude you got to do what is right for you.....but lets look at the facts of recovery.......recovery means abstinence from all mood altering drugs.....weed included.....if you work a progam like A/A or N/A you will see the results of just going out for a drink or just a few toaks more then not it always leads back to our drug of choice  I have seen people with 10 yrs plus go back out there because of one wrong decision......all I know is for a hopeless dope fiend like me 1 is to many and 1000 is never enough....trust me when I tell you your playing with fire.....we never make good decisions wile ''high''..........just my 2 cents

I have already posted on another thread of yours before i saw this one.  I remember telling you that the weed bone was connected to the pill bone. Some of us warned you about the weed.  Hopefully you know now that this addiction is a "we" thing.  Doing it our way keeps us down. Aftercare Aftercare Aftercare!

I'm pro weed I think it should be legalized and taxed, your right if people could toke weed instead of being perscribed pills then heal Ya were all for it. Though it is a mind alterning substance and it takes a lot of mistakes to realize weed is a gateway drug once you start getting high more often then stop your addict mind will look for a substitute high. Yes it helps we get it are you gonna stop have you already now that the worst is over? If your still chiefen and your intake has increased since this post im willing to bet the addict mind just swapped drugs. Though your right w/d from weed is a little agitation loss of appetite and sleep for a week. That's if you abused weed ofcourse, so Ya easiest to get off of. Eventually you'll have to quit it to though why wait? Time to go all inn and quit it all!! I support weed but as an addict I can't do it.

Well i'm back... Weed was NOT the answer.  I also found myself right back on tramadols.....now i'm 4 days clean and single because tramadols stole my life.  I now have done the ROXY/OXY route, the Subutex/Suboxone route... and now tramadols... i am done.  I am powerless over all these mind alterting substances and found myself enabling myself and making excuses.  Tramadol is the least and mild pain pill on the market.  I can't even do them! So because of all of this i will not go backwards and can't afford to get back on anything.  Apparently God or whoever controls us doesn't intend for me to be on anything even alcohol or weed.  So here we are after 20 strong years of substance abuse i am finished.  I have no clue what the word moderation even is and since i know that now i have to be done.  I don't trust myself to take 1 hit, 1 pill, 1 drink 1 anything because 1 ALWAYS multiplies.

As far as the detox stuff goes...Suboxone has far been the worse out of them all.  This tramadol stuff sucks but in any case the least of all of it!

If anyone is struggling with breaking free of this tramadol let me tell you what i did.

I was back up to 6-8 50mg pills daily.

I tapered myself down right off the bat to 3-4 and then about 3 days later 1.5 to 2 and every day after that i went half to half to quarters until finally just stopping.  Had i gone cold turkey i think it would have been much worse.  I can honestly say i feel again i'm not sweaty i'm actually going to sleep at 1030pm and waking up at 730am which is weird for me as the pill life kept me up latttteeeeee! Now i'm gonna spend the next 6 months working on me my body my heatlth and my relationships with people.  I'm not obviously ready to date again even though i really want a woman.  This time i'm gonna not jump the gun and fast trac anything.  Really need to figure this life crap out SUBSTANCE free once and for all.  Thanks for lettling me vent and share if anyone has any questions i'm around all day as these boards have really given me a lot of information power, and wisdom to do this again.  Have a great day.

I don't think that folks are necessarily "opposed" to marijuana or any particular chemical. It's just that they've come to understand & accept that they can't use mood altering chemicals because sooner or later it leads back! This hard to learn -- hard to accept. It's not so much a question of the particular drug but about us, our neurochemistry & our behavior. What is ok for many people, is not ok for us. It can even go beyond pharmaceuticals to eating, gambling, sex, etc. Again, it has to do with behavior & neurochemistry -- the pleasure pathways & stress. There is a way out! Stick with it & keep your eye on the prize.

While you may be avoiding your opiate issues with pot, you are creating new issues for yourself. In fact, making it complicated for your recovery in future. However, I do appreciate the fact that you are not mixing them together. But these drugs are cousins to each other. So, the one you think as safe may be more dangerous. Take care and prefer not to self medicate to save your time, money, health and cool of mind.

I agree with all the above.
Plus, I remember when I was not even in my teens yet and started smoking pot. I would always tell ppl that it is all natural and grows on this earth for a reason..Ha! Well they would always say, that Pot will lead to bigger and badder drugs..well, 45 yrs down the road I did do all kind of different drugs, mostly it had to do with my environment. Everybody was taking something, and it all depended on what yr it was and what was going around, so I guess I will try. Any kind of Mind-Altering substance can start up that Addiction Brain. Also, it changes the body and the chemical makeup of the Brain. YOU got to be clean from all drugs, so that your Brain Chems will all fire up and work right. It takes time and patience, but sooner or later you sure will feel the blessing that can come. I wish you the best and hope you stop the insanity of trading one for another. However, it is your Life and YOU will do whatever you feel is right..(too bad). If you just give it a chance and quit messing with the brain, you will feel more alive!
Praying for the Best!

I have only been off of opiates for 6 weeks and this site has helped me TREMENDOUSLY!! These people know what they are talking about!  They have all been down this road before.  It is a slippery slope thinking one of anything can help you feel better.  I am working one day at a time to feel better.  I wish you all the best.  We can do it! I'll keep you in my prayers.

I really can't believe how many ppl are so opposed to marijuana.  I'm on day 5 of TRAMADOL detox and every time i feel nauseas i just take a few toks and BAM i'm ok.  I only tok a few every now and again when i need to settle the W/D symptoms down.. You all know it's like anything MODERATION is the problem with our addict minds BUT i don't wanna be buzzed driving my kids around or out and about if i don't have to.  Those pills screwed my life up and all i'm trying to do is get through the thick of the immediate discomfort from stopping the drugs.  I'm telling you right now you can either sit around and feel SICK and SICK of yourself OR you can take a natural plant and NOT ABUSE IT.  Just control your behaviors and most importantly STY BUSY!.  I'm not saying you all should get high but if you are coming down off opiates it doesn't make it worse it just occupies the mind so you can make it through the thick of it.  Alright well i hope you all that are actually IN WITHDRAW try it and i wanna see how it makes you feel.  I bet over 80% will say it has helped tremendously.

Yes, that IS an opinion. And most of us who have long time sobriety have seen people try and stay w/ just weed and they always find their way back to other drugs or alcohol. That's not recovery. Good luck to you, though.

I'm going through it right now and it's much MUCH more bearable than say Subs, or Oxy's or ANY BENZO! Benzo detox is the hardest of them all..speaking from experience.  All i was saying up there was this weed is making the withdrawal much more bearable.  If you have smoked it ingested it any way take it through detox you will know what i mean.  If you haven't enjoyed it or EASE your withdrawal symptoms find a new source.   Can't use dirt weed to fix a pharmaceutical dependence.  This Tramadol is my last shot at prescription medicines from here on out.. THEY ARE NO GOOD! ALLL OF THEM>  There is not 1 drug MANUFACTURED that isn't either habit forming or extremely addictive.  I'll take a few toks of pot all day then to go back to prescription medications.  Please keep this thread moving i promise this is not just an opinion post.

Tramadol is not only addictive but is taken by many people recreationally.  It can be especially hard to get off of because it combines painkilling and anti-depressant effects.

Years ago I was prescribed Tramadol, and as you state, the drug is (in my opinion) highly addictive, and did little for pain.
