Overcoming urge to snort

I know this is an odd subject, but I wanted to ask because it's something I'm struggling with, and I'm hoping any of you might have a suggestion.  I quit sniffing oxycodone 3 days ago after 2 1/2 years of use.  I'm handling the other w/d symptoms with all the info I've gained from this site, but today I started getting terrible urges to snort something!  It's terrible, I know!  I don't want to get high right now... in fact that is repulsive to me at this time because it would set me back...but I want to sniff something!  I've been sitting here thinking about what I have around here that I could sniff.  I even considered crushing up a tylenol.  I know my nose/nasal cavity just cannot take it anymore, so I'm not going to do it.  But I have to hold myself back from the tylenol because I just loved to snort oxycodone & snorting is a habit that's going to be difficult to break.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Thank you guys for taking the time to respond.  You are all so right.  The biggest mistake I've been making is entertaining those thoughts of 'I need to snort something'.

trdofbeingtrd:  I've already put your suggestion to use this a.m.  I usually do push-ups with my knees on the floor, but I've been doing them correctly today.  I was surprised to find out that I really can do 10 regular push-ups.  I took a lot of effort, and I know my chest & arms will have to adapt, but I'm going to continue doing the push-ups (& increasing the # of push-ups) when I have cravings to snort.  What an excellent idea.

daretodream:  Great job on kicking the habit.  I know I'm going to be one of those people that has to continually resist the urge to crush & snort something.  Something about the whole preparation & snorting process was incredibly enjoyable to me.  Unfortunately, it became the only thing I truly enjoyed and everything else in my life became a bother.  I'm planning to do things to distract myself every time a craving hits my mind...which will be a lot in these coming days.  I have to go back to work, which I was dreading, but maybe it will prevent me from snorting something and get me closer to the day when those cravings are faint.

lesa:  Thank you for the warning & advice.  I guess I would like to think that I will never touch my doc again, but it has had supreme power over me in the past, so I can't make any claims.  Today, though, I will not use it.  I know that I've set myself up for a battle.  I've been thinking very deeply about this and whether or not it's a battle I can win.  After seeing the successes of the people on the MedHelp forums, I decided that it's worth the fight.  I want this so badly.  I understand what you said about recognizing the behaviors as addictive now.  That's something I didn't really think about before.  I knew I wasn't 'normal' like other people, but I see it more clearly now.

Thanks again, everyone!

Hi Riser.. Addictive Behavior.. This is the term.. I went through this with it myself and also the needle. I still struggle with that one at times.. almost compulsive. as long as we get a handle that this is just another way that our addictions rear it's head and we recognize it for what it is we can combat it.. It is like a pill addict.. I'm this also. You should only take 2 aspirin but yet you take 3.. Our addiction is baffling at times but it is what it is addictive behavior and one we need to be on guard for.. I'm pleased you do not feel like using but just a cautionary note cravings come out of no where. be it too happy our even bored.. so recognize it for what it is ok.. Congrats on taking your life back.. lesa

Hi! I also was snorting oxys and sleeping pills and if i ever did run out I would just sniff literally any sort of pills I could get to. I am now on day 22 without doing it, and I was taking them for a year and a half but I was only snorting them for a few months. I felt that snorting was just a better rush it was an easier high. Once I stopped I realized that even now if I have to take a tylenol or something for a headache or whatever I struggle to not just crush it up and snort it. This has definitely been really hard, but you just have to find something to do when you get those urges go talk to someone or go out driving or something that will keep you away from it..cause to be honest if I had the chance I would have relapsed a few times. I think you will be able to do it. Don't worry you're just starting to come off so yes it's going to be a lot harder now but soon enough the urges wont be as bad, they wont completely stop, but they won't be as bad as the first 2 weeks or so.

Good luck! =)

You do not want to sniff tylenol, it messes up your sinuses so bad it's unbelievable. Sniffing is a habit in the physical sense just like hand to mouth with smoking. However, there is nothing to substitute actually for sniffing, like sunflower seeds are to smoking.

The best thing I can think of is every time you get the urge to sniff something, even if it's strong and quite frequently, is to do ten push ups. When I was in the swim team, every time right after I joined that I mouthed off to the coach or if I started to mess around, I would have to get out and do 60 push ups. Of course I wasn't able to do it when I first started, especially since he was a former marine and made sure my push ups were push ups. If I did them wrong, the count started over, if I didn't make 60, I would have ten added and have to start over, if I had to start over 3 times, I was done swimming for the day. Since I really wanted to swim and I enjoyed it, I would do the push ups as much as I could, after about 20 some times doing push ups, I kept my mouth shut and I swam as hard as I could every practice.

Sorry, I have the terrible habit of making things about me. So, if you do this, and you stick to it, the brain will choose not thinking of snorting more than having to do push ups because of wanting to do it. It shouldn't take to long before not only does that strong craving to snort go away, but you will feel how good the exercise is and will just want to get "high" from doing exercise.

Keep posting, you will get lot's of support and advice here, so even if my advice and run on sentences don't help, you will get some.
