Oxycodone vs. generic Percocet

by Jan333, Dec 27, 2007 10:45AM
I've been on oxycodone PRN w/tylenol at my discretion.  I usually take 500 mg max strength tylenol with 10 mg oxycodone.  Due to an emergency room visit I was given percocet.  Pharmacy filled it
generically, 5 mg oxcodone/325 acetomenaphine.  For some unbelievable reason the Percocet worked much better than taking oxycodone w/ supplemental tylenol.  WHY????  Does anyone have a plausable reason??.  I'm hoping I can taper more quickly w/ percocet than oxycodone.

It's probably just your mind thinking the generic dosen't work as well. There is no plausalbe reason for it not to work because Percocet is just a Name, the ingredient is the same...oxycodone. Are you taking 2 of 5 mg oxycodones? That would equal what you were taking, also you could be building a tolerance to the meds. -zoe

I have found that some pills have a greater effect than others, even if they are the SAME exact drug.
After doing some reading and consulting of professionals, I learned that the fresher pills are (ie. the more recently they were manufactured) the more potent.
Oxycodone will naturally breakdown with down with time, however slowly.
Pills that are a few years old will be markedly reduced in potency than a fresh one.
It is possible that the dose you are on is rare at your pharmacy and thus, not replaced very often.
Who knows, though.

Hi Jan,
The reason the Percocet seem to work better than Oxycontin is the way the oxycodone is released into your body. The Oxycontin is designed to be released into your body much slower that the Percocet. So, even in you're taking the same amount of both you will feel the effects on the Percs stronger and faster...hope that helps...
