PREGNANT ON METHADONE AND SCARED!

by kim8425, Mar 03, 2009 10:23PM
I AM SO GLAD THAT THERE IS A PLACE THAT YOU CAN ASK THE MOST PERSONAL QUESTION THAT I HAVE THAT I CANT REALLY SHARE WITH ANY FAIMLY MEMBERS CAUSE I DONT WANT THEM TO KNOW. I HAVE BEEN ON METHODONE FOR THREE YEARS AND JUST FOUND OUT THAT I WAS PREGNANT. I THINK IM ALMOST 15 WEEKS AND IM WAITING TO SEE A OBGYN. SHOULD I TELL HIM ABOUT MY PROBLEM? CAUSE IM GOING TO A CLINIC AND THEY WANT ME TO STAY ON, {WHICH I THINK ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY AND NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THE FACT I DONT WANT A METHADONE BABY] SHOULD I GO SEE A DOCTOR ABOUT THIS? AND WHAT KIND OF DOCTER? I TAKE ONLY TAKE 20 MGS. A DAY!!! I THINK I COULD COME OFF TAKING LOWER DOSES BUT I DONT WANT TO MISCARRY EITHER! SOME ONE PLEASE TALK WITH ME ABOUT THIS AND PLEASE ONLY PEOPLE GOING THREW WHAT IM GOING THREW. I KNOW ITS A BAD SITUATION AND ONLY PEOPLE GOING THREW THE SAME THING WOULD UNDERSTAND. I WAS ALSO TAKING 2MGS XANAX BUT I HAVE ALSO LOWERED MY DOSE DOWN TO ALMOST 1 WHEN I HAVE A ATTACK. I AM SCARED. SO SOMEONE DROP ME A LINE PLEASE AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!

Yes you need to tell you OB about the methadone,, they need to know what to expect when he or she is born so that they can help them..pregnant women can be taken off methadone at a very slow taper,, i would try to get to the lowest dose possible, but only with dr. assistance.. zanax on the other hand isn't safe for the baby,, but you're going to need to talk to a dr. about how to even get off of it with the baby, cause i don't know that one... i was on vicodin during pregnancy and was very open with OB about the issue,, but i also made sure i found a pediatrician that was experienced with opiate addicted babies and he said that as long as they are expecting that something could go wrong worse case senario would be to wean them off of the drug.. and the only time he ever had issues with treating a baby with this condition is when the mother wasn't honest and they had to use the process of elimination to figure out what is wrong with the baby... he also said that nobody can tell what baby will have symptoms because there has been mothers that take high doses of opiates and their babies have no effects and they've also had mothers on very little doses and their babies have trouble,, so you really won't know until within a few days of birth.. best of luck to you and the little one....

hello there! first of all i want to say my heart goes out to u. Second i am not a dr but i am pregnant and in a similar situation.I have been taking oxycontin in 10 mgs maybe every other week since my first tirmester and im 6mths now. I have done a lot of online research on safe pills to take during pregnancy. From what i have read i found that there are women who take methadone while pregnant and in small doses should be fine, but possible addiction can come to the baby,  on the other hand the xanax i have read about is conciderd a class d pill and is UNSAFE  to take while pregnant. Please talk with your dr to be safe and make sure you and the baby will be ok w/o taking the xanex. Again i am only going on what i have read!

I think its imperative you get with your DR. immediately. I would like to hear what he or she has to say about this. I would start weening yourself down. the good news is methadone does not do any harm to the body's organs, but it has the same wd's as opiates, from my experience.
