Pain med qustion

by alchemist, Dec 25, 2002 12:00AM
I have ofen heard that one should not mix pain meds and the antacid medicine tagamet (cimetidine) because of some side effect problem.  I'm not 100% sure but I think it inhibits the metabolism of the pain meds or something to that effect.  I need to take an over the counter acid reducer for night time acid reflux but I was wondering if the same problem exists for pepcid or zantac.  I do realize that I can take a tums for the problem but I need something that can last all night long.  I don't mean to take up space for a simple question so feel free to post other questions on this thread.

Have a Merry Christmas!!

Have you given L-Tyrosine a try? I describe it fully, including exactly how to use it, in The Recipe. Let me know if you need a copy.

***@****

Many if not most recoverying opiate addicts go through extreme and enduring depression and lack of energy after detoxing. With all due respect to your therapist, I doubt if he can restore the depleted neurotransmitters in your brain that are actually responsible for you feeling this way. But the simple, safe amino acid L-Tyrosine can! Spend 8 bucks for a bottle of 50 caps (nutritional supply stores, etc.) plus some B6 and give it a worl. It won't hurt you and just might enable you to climb out of this pit you're in. In fact, I know it will. You see, I know things about junkies. Call it a gift ... Now, don't use the L-Tyrosine without having a copy of MY version of the recipe. It's not complicated, but must be used in just the right way to really work. E-mail me for a copy, southernsiren.

Merry Christmas and may God Blessings be upon your family.
I read psalms 25 this morning. I saw myself in most of it. I was the first one up I am really going nuts with 2 0r 3 hrs sleep a night. But this to shall pass.  This is day 18 of withdrawl and it feels like day 4. oxycotin withdrawl is worse than heroin and almost as bad as methadone.

Fortunately the Christmas was great,  I have to remind my self I can choose my feelings.  Right now I am faking it until I make it, I have to for the family and Christmas.  I am so friggin tired, fatigue and brain dead, I just needed to share.  You sound like a great guy and we have a lot in common.
Keep in Touch,
Greg

Sorry, I don't knoew the answer to that one. I'd call a pharmacy. usually, Savon has a 24/7 store you can call even on Christmas. It's usually identified as an "always open: in the Yellow pages. Good luck.

O, I had a question: are you taking the tagamet because of heartburn caused by the pain meds? If so, just take the pain pills with a glass of milk and some toast. Follow it up later with some hot soup -- just not tomato soup. Chicken works best.

Hi and Merry Christmas!  I'm a pharmacy tech, and as far as I know, there may be drug interactions w/ Tagament and benzos and narcs like demerol and morphine.  You mentioned taking Tums along w/ it, but you should separate the dosing by  a couple of hours.  Have you considered Ranitidine? (Zantac)  There aren't the drug interactions w/ pain meds, and you can take it along w/ antacids.  Just a thought.  You might consider Prilosec or Nexium, too, but again, I think there's a benzo interaction.    Peaz

Thanks for the response.  Thomas, I don't think it's the pain meds directly, they make me tired and I drink lots of coffe that is doing a number on my stomach.  Also, do either of you know what type of interaction the tagamet and the pain meds have, this way I can keep an eye out for it with the pepcid that I had my wife get.  I think its a metabolism issue but I'm not sure.  Also, Thomas, does the recipie still work while one is tapering or does one have to be off the pills completely for it to work properly?

by peaz, Dec 25, 2002 12:00AM
To: alchemist
You should avoid coffee, FOR SURE, at least a lot of it.  That should be your #1 thing to cut out.  The interactions involve either increasing or decreasing Tagamet's effectiveness.  So it depends on what other drugs you're taking and the individual per se.  I'm not aware of any metabolism alteration.    Peace-----Peaz

To: alchemist - recipe
If you have a copy of my text of the recipe (let me know if you don't), you'll see that there are two phases. The first is dedicated to weathering the acute withdrawal symptoms we're all so fond of. The second phase is dedicated to overcoming the terrible post-withdrawal opiate malaise that robs every one of all physical and mental energy, as well as mental clarity and a reasonably positive attitude. This is because long-term opiate use depletes the brain's neurotransmitters vital to one's well-being, such as dopamine, norepinephrin and serotonin. More than acute withdrawal, this malaise is probably responsible for the majority of relapses.

So, if you're tapering (god bless you for even being able to do it!), DON'T use the first phase of the recipe. You won't need it. But after tapering down to either nothing or a very small daily dosage, you would benefit from the second phase of the recipe. I wrote a rather long post yesterday explaining all about what's involved in this second phase, so, if you don't mind, I'll just paste the same text into this post. Again, if you don't have a copy of MY rightup of the full recipe, e-mail me and I'll send it to you. Good luck with your taper!

***@****

As bad as acute opiate withdrawal is, I find that the crushing lack of mental and physical energy causes more relapses than anything else. But there is a solution for most recovering addicts. Obviously, at this point, you don't need to use most of the recipe, but it sounds like you're ready for some L-Tyrosine. It's an amino acid available in any nutritional supply store that frequently brings recovering junkies back from the dead. It's cheap, safe and a naturally occuring substance we get in our diet every day. Spend 8 bucks and get 50 of the 500mg caps plus a bottle of B6. Upon rising, take, for starters, 1500mgs of L-Tyrosine with a B6 to help absorption. Take it on an empty stomach. You don't need to take it other than first thing in the morning. The effect will last all day. L-Tyrosine stimulates the production of adrenalin which indirectly stimulates that part of the brain that produces the vital neurotransmitters that opiate use (or coke or speed) depletes. This lack of dopamine, norepinephrin and to a lesser extent, serotonin is why you feel the way you do. Don't drink caffeine with it. Believe me, if you take the dose right for you, you won't need any other stimulants. Besides a dramatic boost in energy, you'll experience a renewed mental clarity and relief from depression. You can take up to 4000mgs in the morning, but I recommend you try a much smaller dose and adjust up or down to suit you. If it gives you the jitters, lower the dose. Some also experience a fairly benign and short-lived diahrea in the first hour. This can also be regulated by lowering the dose.

to everybody --- i hope you all had a great holiday.  My girls were happy, so that was great.  they both said it was the best Christmas they've ever had.  went to candlelight service at my old church, that was nice.  i just felt like bawling, though.  i still keep wondering why i can't just be normal.  the psychiatrist is helping, but NOTHING else ever makes me feel like a percocet does. why does it have to be so wrong?
oh well, enough about me.....i truly hope you all are doing okay and i'm proud of those of you who are sticking to the plan for january 1.  lots of love to all of you.

by mrmichael67, Dec 26, 2002 12:00AM
Cimetidine will actually increase the level of methadone in one's body.  Other opiates are not as sure, but methadone is definitely affected.  Cimetidine inhibits metabolism of methadone.  Pepcid is fine to use.  I have used it with no adverse reactions.  Zantac as well.

I'm a Pharmacy Tech too, lol...as you can see.  I see you're posting on the board.  Does that mean you have a problem with narcotics like the rest of us?  Or are you just here to give some helpful advice?

Well, I'm both.  Lost one job after a year because I couldn't keep my hands out of the cookie jar, and my new one I'm back to my old ways.  I've tried stopping 3 times so far, and I have not experienced any withdrawels, so when I want to stop for good, hopefully my "New Years Resolution" things won't be nearly as rough for me as the firt time around.

Anyway, nice to meet a fellow pharmacy tech.  I love my job and can't believe I'm jeopardizing it, all over again.

Hey!! What's happenin'??  No, I'm not here to give advice and information. (besides, mrmichael shows me up everytime-----from now I'n I'm keeping my mouth SHUT)  I worked in a pharmacy for four years or so, was stealing meds for the last two or so...got busted and was given the "opportunity" to either clean up or face some felony charges. I have been clean nearly a year (Jan 7th) and there's NO WAY i could go back to my old job as yet.  I think it would take years, if ever to work w/ narcs as if they were any other med.  I'm not surprised that you're having relapse difficulties------we are all too human and addicted!! Are you getting any counseling or doing AA/NA or something like that?  From personal experience, I think it would enhance your chances of sobriety.  I also belong to a group of professionals (mostly in the medical  or related fields--there are a LOT of us, presumably because of the access factor) and I find that quite helpful.
Tell  me more about your addiction, job setting, etc.  Are you certified and if so, is that in jeopardy in any way?  It sounds as if maybe your employer hasn't a clue, as yet.  I almost got myself detoxed before I was busted---Just didn't quite make 'er.......:-)     Good talking to ya.  Peaz

This is a question which I have researched extensively w/ no results. A poster "worried" me when he says one can get arrested for "doctor hopping" and using "different pharmacies" Recently SC has begun to ask for s driver's license number. I gave mine to one pharmacy, but not the other. The other has my son's license as he picked up the med for me. I didn't "doctor shop" intentionally. One is an internist, one a gynocologist, and one a podiatrist. The same holds true w/ the pharmacies. I took the scrip to the pharmact nearest the doc's office, out of convenience, not subterfuge. All are in town businesses. The two pharmacies are giving me the same meds. One gives me 90 vic a month and the other gives me 60. The same is w/ Xanax. One gives me 60 (.5) monthly and the other is sporadic in fills and numbers. Now, I have pending surgery Friday and I am afraid that this will be some "third" doctor thrown into a mix that i never meant to be illegal... And, w/ this "new show your driver's license" I am paranoid that I will have no pain meds for what everyone agrees is a very painful surgery. I am not sure I understand why I feel "targeted" as an average old fart citizen.. or if indeed there is a "target" directed this way. Inside, w/ this new "show your driver's license, and they write the number down rule"... this causes me pause. I have to get well before I can stop. I do not feel drugs have impaired me and hope to have a surgery this summer that will stop my worst pains. Meanwhile, I do not want someone to slap my hand or worse, arrest or fine me, for what I knowingly have not done wrong. After reading a million hours on the net trying to find the purpose of this new ID thing, and if what I am doing is illegal, I have found nothing other than stories about doctors who have had their licences revoked. Good luck to all who want to quit. I pray for you. I simply want to be pain free and hope to be on my way in 6 months after the final operation. Thx for any insights (or horror stories) you may share.
