My Mom has a script for Paxil... I know it's an antideppresant.. but does anyone out there that has been on it have any good or bad info on it's effectiveness for treating depression...??? She is in end stage COPD and also CHF and says she sometimes gets very depressed... (heck,.... I would too if I couldn't breath or move around much)  Just wondering if anyone out there has any thing good to say about it....or bad....

Thanks in advance for your input

I was prescribed Paxil a few years ago and I took the lowest dose for 4 months.  It was helpful in treating depression.  HOWEVER, it has some very dangerous side-effects, and I had serious withdrawals when I quit.  Google it, and you can get a better idea.  I tapered and I was barely functioning.  There is also a risk of seizures if you get off too quickly. It has also been linked to heart attacks.  I currently take Prozac, and it works just as well if not better.  I am tapering off, and I don't notice any side effects.  In my personal opinion, Paxil does the same thing as other anti-depressants but has many side effects that aren't worth it.  I'm not against anti-depressants (obviously), but I just had a horrible experience with this one.

thats tough. this probably isn't the best forum to ask this question. you might also try the depression and/or anxiety forums...you will certainly get a response in either.

for some this drug works absolute wonders...for others it doesn't. i've seen stories of both. really it will come down to what's right for your mom...and your doc is the only one that is able to judge that direction, along with trial and possibly error.

keep in mind with any of these types of meds, it's a very small percent that responds negatively. they also typically need time to work...2-4 weeks for most.
