Percocet Addiction

How can I effectively wean myself from Percocet?
I am a single mother who cannot afford to miss work to enter rehab or go through withdrawl at home and miss work.  I am embarrassed to ask my PCP. I have been prescribed percocet for joint pain.  I had been taking 2 5-325mg pills every 2 hours I am now trying to stretch that out.  I started out on 8 a day last 5 months ago but would increase the dosage at work as I stand on my feet all day.  I was a fool.

Thank You

I have had problems with percocets for 5 years. I take around 40 mg a day then went to 80mg a day. Now who knows, but I got in trouble with DYFS about cocaine and now I'm willing to take my loved very loved perocets away for good I heard of detox programs that last 3-5 days but you need to be clean of perocets before you go in now this is going to be hard for me. Any suggestions? I sometimes do not feel them because I take too many so I know how bad the feeling is not having them.
Please help.

i am wondering how long the withdrawl symptoms from percoset last. i have been having back problems for the last year, and had surgery in january. i was taking vicadin for 3 months and then percoset for the last 3 months, no one ever told me that i couldn't just stop taking them, i stopped 2-3 weeks ago, and now feel like i am losing my mind, cant sleep, waking up in the sweats, and horrific nightmares, when will this all stop?

The subutex works great.  IF you have got the pills "percs" already then you could try to step yourself down "Good Luck". There is also subuxone, which will stop withdrawl and block other opiates from working at the same time. Kinda like antibuse works for alcohol. I know what it is like to have the pain come back though. Everything I have ever broken or dislocated or had surgery on started hurting again. I had become pain tolerant to the pains before I got on hydros and percs and when I had to stop taking them it really sucked. Lidoderm patches helped with these pains without getting high because they are local pain killers. Then i weaned off them.

KJS Mom,
I was doing Per 10 and 5/325's everyday for four years. I was doing 20-40 a day, and living a double life. My employer didn't know, my girlfriend didn't know. The only person who knew that something was really wrong was my mom. I went from 200lbs to 122lbs and my mom knew I wasn't eating even though I had a nice house, cars and a good job.
The inevitable happened my supply stopped and because I was so dependent on the pills I started making my own perscriptions until the boys in blue arrested me. I understand that you can't miss work, kids to take care of but if you want to stop without the pain of terrible withdrawl there are five day detox establishments all over. They used Subutox with me and I had no problem getting off the pills but to stay off is another thing.

I was takeing 10-12 percocet 10/325 daily. My surgeon said he would not operate on me (back surgery) unless I get weaned off the percocet down too vicodin ES.  He said if I had surgery allready tollerent of that high dose, the pain would not be bearable even if they pumped me full of morphine. So my personal doctor had me taper. He cut me down to 10 5/325 daily for 5 days. That was rough being cut in half...but I kept in mind it could have been worse with none at all.  On days 6-8 I took 8 daily. Days 9-12 6 a day. days 12+ 4 a day untill I run out, then on to Vicodin ES.
I am in Major pain, but I hardly have any withdrawl feelings. To help a little with the pain, they put me on flexeral, ultrum, neurotin (helps with leg pain).
It is best to tell the doc. the truth and be slowly tapered off. Most people don't want there docs to know they are dependent because they are afraid of being cut off cold turkey. What I have done in the past is just point out what the FDA says.  If you have been on them a few weeks,  "DO NOT ABRUPTLY STOP TAKEING THEM".  It works.  Although I didn't have to tell my doc. that this time. I am lucky to have a compassionate doc. He said I could even stay on the percocet if I wanted...but I would never have surgery.
