Positive Drug Test after being Clean for 3 Weeks

I have recently had a urine test while undergoing rehab for heroin addiction.  Though I have NOT used any opiate (or any substances beside food and water) in 3 weeks, I still tested positive for opiates.

My last relapse lasted two years.  I used predominantly black tar heroin.  Is it possible that some of the heroin has sequestered itself into my fat cells and now is slowly leaking back into my system.  Is it normal to test positive after being clean for 3 weeks?

Let me be clear.  I was two days shy of being clean for 3 weeks when I took my test.  The three week figure is not since major withdrawal symptoms ceased, it is since I last took any opiates.

This is of vital importance as the program that I am currently in has a strict policy about drug tests and I fear that I am going to be kicked out onto the streets even though I am trying hard to change.  Also, this is my last chance with family and friends to try to make this change.  I have violated their trust many times in the past and they will never believe me that I am clean after this.

Any answers you can provide would be very helpful.

Thank You!

Heroin stays in your system a minimum of 2-3 hours on average and a maximum of 72 hours. There are things that can effect how long the drug stays in your system like your size, your metabolism (this is key), how you took the drug, your tolerance, age, and how much and how often it was taken.

Now what you asked about it being stored in fat is very possible, the only problem is that there is not nearly enough research in this area just yet it's fairly new. Most illicit drugs and meds are lipophilic- meaning they tend to store themselves in areas rich in fat and certain other organs (especially after stopping use)  If you were a chronic user it is possible to test possible because of the distribution of the drug throughout the body. And about 5% of false positives are due to human error. If you knew exactly what type of equipment they were using to do the urinalysis I couls be more specific.

heroin only stays in the body for less than 5 minutes(not 2-3hrs).it is quickly metabolised into 6monoacetylmorphine which lasts upto an hour then it is metabolised into morphine.if u hav a dirty UA afta 3 wks clean id ask for more extensive tests.poppy seeds can cause a dirty UA.neways good luck.

I am well aware of this, it's what I do for a living, I try to put my posts into layman's terms as much as possible. When testing for heroin in urinalysis often both heroin and it's metabolite 6MAM are looked for being that it's not difficult to get drugs in most rehab centers and since 6MAM is not a metabolite of codeine or morphine even though heroin is metabolized into morphine before it reaches the brain.

None of this would have been accurate in answering his/her question of whether or not it is possible that the drug has been stored in fat cells and if this could cause him to show as positive. He/she is scared about being kicked out of rehab not grad school.

the original poster wasnt talking about codeine or morphine.
u said heroin stays in the body at least 2-3hrs.i merely corrected u.sori.
since heroin only lasts minutes in the body it would b polntless looking 4 Heroin in a ua as u suggest they do.when testing 4 heroin they look 4 6mam(the metabolite)not heroin.
i think u underestimate the intelligence of the poster.i think u dont like yr information being questioned.neways i enjoyed ur cut and paste PAWS post.neways good luk with that

I wasn't trying to jump on you, people just get to be aggravating sometimes(not you) and someone in my position does not take well to some of the BS that people say here making this place into a high school locker room when that's not what this is about. I'ts just not always easy to tell when you're reading words on a page and not face to face exactly what someone means. I was just saying that if he took heroin it would be able to be detected in urine up to 3 days since he was scared of being kicked out of rehab and just wanted to know if he could get a positive after 3 weeks. The codeine and morphine was just something else I mentioned about the standard urinalysis testing. It doesn't matter anyway, I had just finished reading a different post and took what you said completely wrong!! so I apologize.
