Prescribed by Dr.?

How many of us have been prescribed our meds by our PCP or other physician?? I do feel I was overprescribed tremendously for a minor condition for almost 10 years and each time I would say something I was basically patted on the head like a child and told to take my medicine.  Well here I am in withdrawal.. Just wondering if any of you have had the same experience??

My doc may have not had full detail as to the possibility of addiction to the Rx prescribed - as I went in and said, point blank, don't give me anything that will produce the slightest buzz b/c I knew I had a problem with those kinds of things.  However, it was me who continued to take them after realizing they were "goodies", and it was me who went up on the WWW in search of pharms to supplement my legitimate script so I could keep upping the dose.  I've got no one to blame but myself for being in the predicament that I currently find myself in.  I know I'm predisposed to party, but Puh-Leez!  I've screwed it up, but I'm cleaning up my mess, and to me part of that is owning it as my own little mess created solely by me.

only my two cents - fwiw.

I agree with you.  As I posted elsewhere I have been on norco alost 3 years I was up to 20 plus a day.  My doctor just keeps giving them to me.  since insurance will not pay for my shoulder to be replaced until i am older it has to be controlled by pain meds.  He eve suggested to put me on stronger meds like percs and morphin.  I refused and last year started to wea down myself.  i am at 5 a day and have lots of pain but want to get off them ll together.  The doc keeps telling me I am crazy to live in pai and should just take them until they can replace my shoulder.  But I am 37 now and insurance does not want me to have the surgery until i am at least 45.  That is a lot of years.  SO I do hold my doctor somewaht accountable as I do insurance.  But trust me I have no illusions that I am not also very responsible for my own acctions.
It is very frustrating I think. A real catch 22 and I am not sure the right answer.  My mom is a retired er/ortho nurse and also did work with pain patients.  She says it is messed up because you get people with true pain issues and most docs are afraid and refuse to prescribe pain meds.  mostly because you get a few docs who hand them out to freely then the DEA comes in and now is so strict on pain managmet. But you can find the doctor who still belives pills are the best answer and I just happened to have been referred to him by my insurance.  Anyway, I have no excuse I never said no, I wish I would have stayed with a low dose of one a night to help me the pain (which is worse at night).  But I got myself into this and am trying to get off them.   It just does not help insurance will not let me switch doctors and mine keeps pushing the pill route and has no other ideas to help me fight insurance.
Sorry to ramble I am just frustrated.  And scared, these last 5 to wean off of are going to be hell, I know it.

No I agree with what you said...  I just wish I could turn back time and asked more questions eached timed the scripts changed.  I saw my PCP for 10 yrs and after a couple yrs when things went from Motrin to Ultram to Darvocet, etc, etc to Norco (without me asking for them) but never turning them down! I wish I would of asked more questions!! But hindsight is 20/20 and after 5 yrs I was comfortable with the numbness...  No litigation for being an addict here!

HI dont take offence ,but the bottom line is you could of went to another physican. Addiction is the reason doctors are reluctant to prescribe percocet, oxys etc, as people seem to be magnetized to that office.People on this forum may of been born at night, but not last night!! PLease the first step is to be honest to yourself. IF you are telling it like it is, contact a lawyer an get advise on civil Litigation, as you feel the physican acted in a negligent manner, over prescribing, using an inoppropriate drug to treat a minor condition.all the best

Oh I completely agree with you!  I do know the the first five yrs I was treated I was not an addict and took my pills as prescribed.  After much changing of the opiates to stronger and stronger finally reaching Norcos I was in LOVE and #120 a month was now not enough for my minor condition!  When I first started going to the dr I had never used or abused anything!  This was the point I was trying to make...  I wish I was just left alone and at the time I did not know any better.....  Now I am an addict.

I am going to give you my opinion, but this is only how I am.  Don't take offense.  My PCP had been prescribing my percocet at a quantity of 120 pills/visit.  I agree with you in your statements that we are overmedicated by those that should not be dispensing meds as they do.  Hello, why do we have pain management MD's if our PCP's act as if medicine is a "one stop shop."  In my situation, however, I was an addict and knew exactly what I was doing.  I could blame the doctor, but I am the addict who took them and can't blame him for my behavior.  But yes, I agree with you.
