Prescription Drug withdrawal

I have had several surgeries in the past two years and as such, have been on some pain medications - namely oxycodone and percocet (which I understand is a combination of oxycodone and tylenol?)  The last time I was at my rehabilitation physician's office, she thought it was time that we "wean" me off of those things and she wrote a script for Vicodin.  I have tried it, but I really don't care for it.....seems to affect my breathing (like I suddenly become alert and realize I haven't taken a breath in awhile) and it also makes me kind of nauseous.  Since I still have some oxycodone, I will try to take just one of those a day and no vicodin.....but I often feel restless and kind of jumpy, almost like restless leg syndrome symptoms that affect my upper extremities as well....I get very anxious and just can't sit still.  Is this what withdrawal is like??  What do I do?  I don't think I can quit taking the oxycodone, but it will run out very soon and I don't see my doctor until March.....even when I take 1/2 a Vicodin, it doesn't seem to help.  I would rather take nothing at all, but this anxious feeling I have (which I can only describe as sort of a movement disorder...I have to tap my feet, have to move my arms, etc.) would only be worse.  Any ideas??  Jo

Thanks so much for your support....when I started taking these things, I kept worrying about addiction and my doctor said it wouldn't be an issue as long as I was taking them for pain.  Well....apparently, she was wrong.  I am trying hard not to take anything, but I did take a couple of Trader Joe's Melatonin, which I hope will help me sleep a little.  I just can't take that jittery feeling.  Well,, never again!!  Thanks, everyone....I appreciate your comments!  Jo

hey.. if it is withdrawl, just know it won't last forever.  YES that jumpy anxiety feeling sucks, but we've all gone through it, and many of us past it.

i'm saying this so you know it won't last long, it's part of the procees, and eventually you will get back to normal.  it's kinda of hard to bypass any withdrawl symptoms.. BUT THEY DON'T LAST.  you will get better, and i think i can speak for all of us by saying you will feel a helleuva lot better once the narcotics are completely out of your system.

good luck.. and welcome to the forum..

warmly,
mj

I have to always have my toes moving too!  None of my sister's ever liked sharing a bed w/me b/c it drove them nuts.  I never even know that I'm doing it.  Someone once told me that it's a sign that your mother didn't rock you enough when you were a baby.  That could be true for me b/c mom had 3 all in diapers....so close together.  I'll bet she just left me in the baby bed b/c I  was the youngest and she was probably chasing a todler and a crawler around.

But it does sound like withdrawal.  Even when I had to cut back a little to make my supply last longer, you get those if your body isn't getting what it's used to having.

Welcome!

It sure sound like withdrawal. I guess you have a decision to make. Since you can't see your doctor for a while, what are your options? Take the Vicodin and taper from there, or stay on the Oxy and run out, and go cold turkey. Either way, you will be felling withdrawal. What have you decided?
