Quit one thing, now quitting the next!

by angel44240, Jan 31, 2008 09:12PM
Geez, this is very hard! I've smoked maybe 5 cigarettes in a 32 hour period, and things are okay.. however, I want to cold turkey the dam things and get on with my life!
I go to my doctor on Monday and she may prescribe me the Chantix.. (As if I need any medication.. dangit! But, good thing is, it's not habit forming! :D) I definitely don't want to take something that has nicotine in it, that's for sure.. one of the main reasons I'm quitting smoking!
I spoke with an RN from the American Lung Association today, and know what she told me? "That's why we don't recommend cold turkey smoking cessation, it causes relapse all too often" I'm like.. 'WHAT??'
I didn't get many responses before, and made me realize I was probably posting on the wrong board, but I also realized that I have a dam nicotine addiction! DAM! lol
So anyway, day 14 off of Trams, doing AWESOME and never better- but now THIS! Oh boy..
I'm going nutso, I think.. help! lol..

I know the cutting down is a good first step.  I believe in cold turkey, but I also have heard Chantix works.  Good luck!  You kicked the worst thing- this is gonna be a cake walk!

LOL.. what doesn't make much sense is, I quit cold turkey every single time I found out I was pregnant for all of the kids.. (4 kids here.. :D) I started back up in May of '01.. been smoking a pack a day since. stupid stupid..
Oh I'm determined.. nothing's stopping me.. It's easier to replace my sanity than to replace a vital organ such as my heart or my lung! HEHE

LOL.. come to think of it, I just lost a 'step-father' from lung AND brain cancer (caused by his smoking 2 packs of cigs a day), losing an uncle who is living on only 12% of what lung he has left (only has about 6 weeks left to live now), so I realized, "Hey.. Dumb@$$, it's alot easier to replace the nicotine habit than to replace all of my vital organs.. and DEATH isn't reversible!"
:D

I have to quit too. I should never have been smoking in the first place since I have asthma and sometimes have  a very hard time breathing!! I wheeze every single day for god sakes. HOw terrible is an addiction when you keep inhaling thick choking smoke into your lungs full of carcinogens when you are wheezing so bad you can barely breathe in a breath of air yet you continue doing it anyhow??? I have 1 and half packs left here and not buying anymore. when they're gone, theyre gone and thats it. I have to do this. My husband is also starting to come down hard on me for it. Everytime I go outside to smoke (I dont ever do it in the house, and the kids dont even know i do it, they've never seen me do it) he makes comments on how bad I stink from it and he hates it. He's never been a smoker his entire life and he HATES IT so much! So in that respect that will be helpful to me in quitting. He has tried to force me to quit in the past and even times where I snuck around behind his back smoking and he was furious when he found out I was doing it again. (I hid the smoke smell thanks to the stupid woodburner stove- Id let the smoke from it get all over my coat and hair so Id still smell like smoke and it'd cover up the cigarette stink apparently). But lately he has a nose like a bloodhound and can still smell the cigs over the wood smoke, LOL.  ANyhow bottom line is, I have to quit too. This is gonna be way harder than pills I think! Ive been smoking since I was 15.....and Im 37 now. I dont have enough fingers on my hands to count the years and I suck at math, rofl . ALONG TIME. TOO LONG.   All you others who are still smoking but want to quit, when might you try to kick the habit? Maybe we can all join the quit smoking club together too =)

As I mentioned yesterday I quit smoking 24 years ago. I had wanted to for a while and it was always, when I get done with this pack I won't buy anymore, but did. One day I was working on a spillway for a pond and bent over and a new pack of cigarettes, with maybe 2 smoked out of the pack, fell out of my shirt pocket and into the water. I thought well **** that was a waste of money, I think they were $0.65 a pack at thet time. I decided that was a good time to quit and did. Good luck to both of you, as you know like with any addiction it's all in the will power.

Good luck Angel...I thought smoking was the hardest to quit...I relapsed many times....but maybe this will motivate you...my ex called last night as he was bringing our son back to my house after a karate class and he says.."I think I'm having a stroke"....He smokes about 2 packs/day, but He ws ok shortly after he got to my house. I encouraged him to go to the E.R>..he said "no"...but he called me about 4 hrs. later and said he did go and they said he had a TIA (trans ischemic attack)an episode of not enough blood getting to your brain usually from partial onstruction af an artery from plaque or an embolism... which is a precursor/warning sign of a stroke....so he is scared and I told him you need to ditch the da** cigs...alright...I'm sorry..I guess that maybe isn't very encouraging, but just a reminder that I care about you and everyone else and we all need to stay healthy for our families and each other....geez...sorry I'm rambling...it must be the anxiety today....GOOD LUCK!!! you are strong and you can do it!!!

That is just so ironic! ((2 last cigarettes falling into the dang pond)) LOL.. sounds like something I'D do! hehe

TroubleinOhio-- I go to the doctor on Monday and she's going to prescribe me something (preferably Chantix) so I can quit altogether..

I've had 16 cigarettes since 3 days ago.. Oh my.. Each time, I think about how my lungs are looking, thinking of when the doctor diagnosed me with PAD in 2005, thinking about how my heart just races like crazy when I just walk up the dang steps, and how my kids are being affected by the second hand smoke (although we smoke by the garage and nowhere else.. thank God), and how the doctor told me that I HAVE to stop smoking NOW or my kids will be burying my @$$ soon...

I've thought about cold turkey on Monday..

I talked to someone at the American Lung Association and they said we WILL (usually 90% of us) have slip ups.. hmm.. I thought I was the only one..

So what do ya say about MOnday?? :D
