Rapid detox from methadone and naltrexone implants

by cleanman, Aug 01, 2002 12:00AM
I am interested to hear from anyone who has been through a rapid detox following methadone or heroin addiction and then had a naltraxone implant.  I have been clean for 18 months after having two naltrexone implants but can't find anyone else who has managed to come off after using such a high dose of methadone (300 ml per day).  Would also be interested to hear about any side effects from naltrexone and rapid detox, as I have experienced depression, anxiety and Delirium tremors and extreme aggression!

I went through a rapid detox back in May of this year.I also have a naltrexone pellet.I was detoxed off of OxyContin. The week following the detox I suffered physicalw/d from hell.Violent vomiting and diarhea (diarrhea) for the first 24 hours could not walk without help for 3 days severe leg pain for about 7 days goose bumps runny nos cold/hot etc. etc.(you know the deal).Still don't sleep without medication. What is really killing me though is the anxiety, depression and confusion since the detox. Most days I really am not worth a ****!!I have come to the conclusion it's because of the damn naltrexone. What this stuff does is keep your brain from using any opiates including it's own natural ones called endorphins, thus comes the anxiety and depression.I gotta tell ya my freind this is my last pellet,I'll take my chances with the cravings and hopefuuly i will start to feel better.Talk to mrmichael on this forum he can explain the whole endorphin thing better than me.He explained it to me and I believe every word.

Mine is implanted in my lower abdomin (abdomen) just below the "bikini line" Though I dont' wear a  bikini!!It releases naltrexone continuosly into my system. It lasts about 6 to 8 weeks.I can hardly wait till this last one wears out,and pray this anxiety and depression gets better.

To: endorphins?
I have been off the opiates for almost 30 days now and I am ready to get back to living sober. I am sooooooo run down, I have read that prolonged use of opiates causes your body to quit producing endorphins. Is this true? What can be done about it? How long will it take my body to start producing them when I impliment ya'lls suggestions? What Vitamines can I take? And what exactly is an endorphin anyhow?

Thanks for those of you who will help me,
wm

Your body will eventually start to produce endorphins again.  When it will happen is hard to say.  Excersise is one excellent way to get your body to produce them.  Endorphins are called endogenous opioids.  Naltrexone has the same effect on them as it does on any other opioid.

by cleanman, Aug 02, 2002 12:00AM
mrmichael, have you had a naltrexone implant?  Can anyone explain more to me about whether the depression is caused by the naltraxone or just difficulty with dealing with life after being on drugs for so long? Also, to anyone who's had a naltraxone implant, are the effects of depression and anxiety worse soon after implantation?

Ok,how much oxy were you on??  Meth can be tricky, I got into the same situation you are in right now.  I would by the wafers, then I would say to myself "ill just get ****** up one more time, then start to take the methadone" so I would get ****** up, take the meth, then get screwed up again and so on....... so I was taking methadone and oxy, at the same time........ wow did that suck.  So this last time what I did was use a MINIMAL AMOUNT of meth.  I was taking around 200mg of oxy a day.  So I took 10mg of meth the first day, then for the second and third I took 7.5mg a day, then the fourth day I took 5 and the 5th day I took 2.5, and then that was it, I felt tired the 2nd day i was off the meth, but after that I was fine. You have to use Minimal amounts otherwise you will be screwed, NOW HERE IS WHERE YOU HAVE TO LISTEN,AND I WILL PROBABLY GET **** FOR SAYING THIS, BUT THIS IS WHAT I SUGGEST. If you can do this, I would start taking smaller amounts of oxy for the next 2 weeks, don't take any meth, then try the detox I just did, I say this because it worked for me, I made sure i had the methadone out of my system, and I assume you don't want to go through hell for the 2 weeks which is why I said take the oxy during that time, then take the methadone........ I know its a little weird, but trust me it works.  And try to keep in mind that methadone lasts a long time, take 5mg and wait it out, don't take anymore until you absolutely have to, you should be able to go atleast 12 hours.........

L-Tyrosine can be bought at GNC or any vitamin store, its an amino acid that helps replenish seratonin levels........ or something like that............ write back with any questions.

Depression is a part of detox whether you are on the naltrexone or not.  But, any little endorphins that your body might produce will do absolutely nothing when you are on the naltrexone.  The endorphins would definitely help with the depression.  One interesting thing I read was whether a peson would rather be in depression for a couple of years or be addicted for the rest of their life.  Depression is a main factor in a lot of addicts usage.  The depression after a detox should not last that long.  If it did, I am sure that the depression itself would make quite a few relapse, not abstaining from using a pellet.  Any better feelings that you could get would only help in your recovery.  Don't block them with the naltrexone.  My biggest thing is what if you are in a bad accident with trauma?  The pain is going to suck because that pellet will keep you from getting pain relief.  They will not be able to override the blockade.  They could remove the pellet, but you would still have to wait quite some time for it to not be effective any more.  Any time is too long to wait in that type of situation.  Depression shouldn't happen for a few years after detox;  that is not the norm.

what is your personal experience? From my own experience of being on  methadone maintenance for 13 years I can tell you categorically that depression is a major factor in recovery which may last for several years, albeit that naltrexone makes it worse.  I think it is wrong to give out the impression that you will be depression free after 2-3 months.

I never said that it would be over in 2-3 months.  I said that it shouldn't last a couple to a few YEARS.  And, from what I have read, the pellet is supposed to be a temporary thing to use to ensure abstinence.  After a while, you have to try to get some more faith in your recovery and not lean on the pellet.  That is not what I told or am telling to the other person.  This is what I am saying to you.  The pellet can be a good thing for certain individuals.  But, God forbid, you might be in a car wreck sometime this week and what if you break ribs and a hip?  You are going to be a hurting unit, with no relief in sight.  I never wrote that the depression would be over that soon.  Even during depression, some people do get periods of time where they feel better.  A lot of people feel really good right after excercise.  It has been studied that excercise does click in endorphin production.  They can be just produced without excersize and the person would be able to enjoy that moment when it happens if they aren't on the pellet.  And, after a year or two, if the person is in major depression still, then I would say that other causes should be investigated.  There are other treatments for depression.  Depression from opiate withdrawal does not last a couple of years and a naltrexone pellet is not any way to treat it.  And, at that point, it surely doesn't help matters either.

I have been going through something very similar to you. You were on 200mg / day oxy and started taking meth with it? Are you saying you used the oxy for two weeks to get off the meth by tapering them and then used the meth for a few days to get off everything all together.
How long were you using for on a steady basis? How long were you at 200mg / day of the oxy? And how long did it take you to build up to that dose.... Did the meth really help with the withdrawls?
Did you take anything else ....ie. valium, clonidine?
thanks for the help...

Methadone creates what is called a blockade effect.  It will block ALL effects of other opioids, including analgesia and euphoria.  You are better off doing what you are doing....stopping the vicodin.

My experience was to exercise.  Would run till I thought I was going to collapse.  Took only 2 weeks before I was actually getting a real good nights sleep.  On the eighth day I felt my natural endorphins we taking care of my problem. It take a little effort, but the result are great. I don't even take any thing stronger than an asprin now.  Am eating alot of veggies and rare meat and chicken. Taking herbs.  I can work all day and enjoy life again. Never ever want to be in that place again.  It was the most horrible place in the world. Did it all over several years.
