SSRI And Tramodol

by ladyboop, Jun 11, 2008 07:34PM
This is more of a comment, If you are taking an SSRI and you mix it with Tramodol, Ultram, you are increasing your chance for a seizure. Please be careful.

My dr long ago put me on Ultram I also took celexa. Well after one dose of ultram, I started to see stars, Then got light headed, Next thing I know, I am waking up on the floor in the store. Needless to say, Scared out of my mind.. Come to find out. You are not suppose to mix those meds...

You are also at risk for serotonin syndrome this can be fatal.

There is also risks if you are taking too many supplements that raise your serotonin level at the same time say SAM E and 5hpt at high doses .Plz do lots of research before you take anything so you know what you might be getting your self into.

Serotonin syndrome is a life-threatening drug reaction that causes the body to have too much serotonin, a chemical produced by nerve cells.

Causes    Return to top

Serotonin syndrome most often occurs when two drugs that affect the body's level of serotonin are taken together at the same time. The drugs cause too much serotonin to be released or to remain in the brain area.

For example, you can develop this syndrome if you take migraine medicines called triptans together with antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). Popular SSRI's include Celexa, Zoloft, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Lexapro. SNRI's include Cymbalta, and Effexor. Brand names of triptans include Imitrex, Zomig, Frova, Maxalt, Axert, Amerge, and Relpax.

The FDA recently asked the manufacturers of these types of drugs to include warning labels on their products that tell you about the potential risk of serotonin syndrome. Talk to your doctor before stopping any medication.

Serotonin syndrome is more likely to occur when you first start or increase the medicine.

Older antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) can also cause serotonin syndrome with the medicines describe above, as well as meperidine (a painkiller) or dextromethorphan (cough medicine).

Drugs of abuse, such as ecstasy and LSD (“acid”), have also been associated with serotonin syndrome.

Symptoms    Return to top
Symptoms occur within minutes to hours, and may include:

    * Restlessness
    * Hallucinations
    * Loss of coordination
    * Fast heart beat
    * Rapid changes in blood pressure
    * Increased body temperature
    * Overactive reflexes
    * Nausea
    * Vomiting
    * Diarrhea

Exams and Tests    Return to top

The diagnosis is usually made by asking questions about your medical history, including the types of drugs you take.

To be diagnosed with serotonin syndrome, you must have been taking a drug that changes the body's serotonin levels (serotonergic drug) and have at least three of the following signs or symptoms:

    * Agitation
    * Uncoordinated movements (ataxia)
    * Heavy sweating not due to activity (diaphoresis)
    * Diarrhea
    * Overactive reflexes (hyperreflexia)
    * Fever
    * Mental status changes such as confusion or hypomania
    * Muscle spasms (myoclonus)
    * Shivering
    * Tremor

If you have just start taking or increased the dosage o

OMG!!!  I have been taking ultram for about 9months and I am at a very, very high dose right now.  I also take Zoloft!!  someone said that Zoloft is a SSRI??  Why would my doctor put me on those two meds together if it were dangerous??   I don't understand.
Now I'm really scared.   I've been trying to get off of Ultram for about the past two months.  The one time I tried really cutting back, I got super depressed and my doc actually increased my zoloft to help with that depression.

So, is taking these two meds together dangerous?????

by ladyboop, Jun 11, 2008 08:52PM
Believe it or not, Most Dr do not know! Not long ago I had a dr try to give me Ultracet.. He had no clue!!! It is scary.. I am surprized that where ever you get your meds filled, did not catch it.. You may want to talk to your Dr about it.. I do not know what else to tell you to do. I would not be taken anymore than you need to keep the w/d's at bay. Maybe the Dr can put you on something else.. I really do not know...

Good luck and keep posting. Let us know if you talk to your Dr, and what he says..

YES it is dangerous .... both for seizures and for SS . lady is right not alot of doctor understand tramadol at all.Its also alot more of a risk if you are taking more then 8 trams a day .

by ShockMe24, Jun 11, 2008 09:25PM
I notice more and more that some doctors don't know what the hell they're talking about. Phlebo1, you should print out all the research articles you can find on the subject, ball them up and throw them at your doctor. They love to throw ****** pills at us don't they?

by fedup4now, Jun 11, 2008 09:35PM
I am currently on Effexor, and over 400mg of Tramadol daily.  I have been doing this for almost 2 years.
If nothing has happened yet - does that mean it will not happen?
I am sure my Dr had no clue - she really doesn't even know the effects of tramadol.
Should I talk to my Dr. - keeping in mind it has been a long time.  If you have a few of the symptoms are you in trouble.  What if you have SS - do you just live with it? Put up with the symptoms?

I would do your research. Google this question and maybe drugs.com
From what I have heard, it can happen at any time but I am no expert.

The pharmacist told me that you are at a higher risk of seizure and serotonin sydrome if you take ultram and a SSRI and commented about wondering why the doctor prescribed it.

My NEW doctor today told me there is no way you should use them both, and told me to ditch (flush) the ultram and that someone on an SSRI or SSNI should in no way be taking that medication with ultram or ultracet.

I flushed mine down the toilet today.

Thanks for all the great info.  I read over it kind of quickly and it's late (for me anyway:) so my question is...do you think it's safe for me to take something like SamE if I also take Imitrex (triptan for migraine)? I should also throw in that I take Topamax (anti seziure med. but I take it for prevention of migraine). If anyone on here takes these together, I'd love some input, please.

It can happen at anytime actually the longer you stay on high levels the more of a chance you have .

by avisg, Jun 12, 2008 06:53AM
hr,
how often are you taking the imitrex?

by HR_PuffnStuff, Jun 12, 2008 08:16AM
To: avisg
Sadly, I need to take it multiple times per week. I have chronic migraines that used to be almost daily but with the Topamax they have lessened slightly to 3-4 per week. I take 50mg. at a time. ( I use the 100mg. pills but cut them in half...they are expensive so I try and make them last longer this way).

by avisg, Jun 12, 2008 08:38AM
HR I think it would be ok to take the sam e. Just stay at the low end of dosage .I was taking way to much of a few of the supplemts at once .I have now read if you are taking more then one thing that can effect your levels so cut doses.

Guys who are taking these things and haven't experienced any seizures, you still need to talk to your doctor.  I had been taking an over the counter sinus med (tylenol Sinus) for years for this hayfever and chronic sinusitis with no problems.  Well the problem came when I ran out for a few days and went to the store to get some more.  BOOM!!!
Passed out in wal-mart, concussion, scalp laceration (required 10 stitches), and a night in the hospital.  Complete blood work up showed nothing in my system.  My doctor said I had a seizure because I had suddenly stopped taking the meds.  ENT told me to NEVER take that med again.  It was a combination of many different meds (in the tylenol sinus).  Dr. said that by taking it all those years and then stopping caused the siezure.

Ironic huh!  The hydros and ambien never did anything like that, but the OTC meds caused me to have a seizure.  I think I need to stay away from everything.

Have a Great Day Guys
Susan

I have seen so many problems from ultram, mental, liver, depression etc. I would rather see people take hydro than this drug for extended periods
