So, I just flushed

No big deal. The toilet is a fitting place for them. I've had them for awhile, never unsealed them until this minute. I don't want anybody here to worry about me taking, as they are now gone. The physical stuff is over. We all have to overcome the psychological stuff in the best way we can. That's been my point.

Unfortunately, you will always be at high risk for getting in to trouble with opiates. The only way you can bring your risk all the way down is to never use them again. But, since that sounds scary, it is best to work with an excellent pain specialist that undertsands addiction. And learn absolutely all you can about the disease of addiction. It can be very sneaky and tricky and suddenly blindsight you. It is imperative to change old belief systems and ideas to lower risk. Many people are in the same predicament as you - you just need very careful planning and symptom management.

Good luck.

I have a question, I am on day 5 clean after a VERY rapid taper (my own choice) going from 5-6 Oxy and 10+ Vicodon/day less than a month ago.  Today is the first day that I feel "alive" again.  However, I have a chronic pain issue (I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but I'm not sure now - having been off the meds for a few days and not having nearly as much pain as I felt while on the meds) and I know that at some point I will need pain meds.  I have SEVERE menstrual cramps (I've taken pain meds for the first day or two of my cycle since I was in high school - I'm 39 now) and I have a pretty bad back.  The thought of NEVER having pain meds again is terrifying not because of the buzz issue, but because of the pain issue.  Should I not get pain meds again, ever??

Yeah, actually it's called denial. My experience with pain pills and those from other people (include my deceased brother whom overdosed after several prior rehab attempts...) has been that once a person has become addicted and then having gone CT or tapering down towards a CT, and then using again (or increasing again as in my situation) is a really really bad idea. Let there be no doubt about it.

Relapse always begins with that first transgression. One pill soon becomes "one too many" and "10,000 become never enough" ( an NA saying).

It's almost as if the body never went clean as it becomes addicted again at a much quicker pace. It's not like how it was originally when the body was first introduced to pain pills and with time required more to keep the euphoria maintained, but instead it's as if one had never quit and the need for more picks up very quickly to high levels similar to where one had eventually quit at! An interesting phenomena indeed.

Soo, If you plan on using again even for a day or two, be prepared to being mentally and physically seduced into wanting to do more and thinking more about doing more...and most likely having to go through those ugly withdrawals again, mental as well as physical. Uggh.

Good luck with your choices,
-Vic

not sure if I am or not. What's the criteria? I haven't used since the 13th when I gave my BF the majority of my stash (about 40 pills) and I haven't had a bad craving for the past 2 days. I've only been using for fun for the past month or so.
I think I was on my way to being an addict but I think I nipped it in the bud before I got there. I think. I enjoy the buzz but that doesn't really make me an addict...does it? I almost want to take some to see if it sparks that craving again. If I does I'll flush the rest of the pills and be done with it.
I know for a fact that when these 8 pills are gone I wont go looking for more.

Maybe I wont ever take them at all. I think I'm keeping them for a lot of reasons and one is a test of my will power.

So I'm not the only one with a stash then? I still have 8 pills but can't seem to bring myself to flush them. I haven't taken any in days and I'm not what most would consider truly addicted (I don't think). I've only been using recreationaly for about a month but I've been taking meds for pain off and on for almost a year.

but I still keep hanging onto those 8 pills. I think my reasoning is that I believe I can take them in a month or so when I'm not craving anymore...just for one more buzz. That's dumb isn't it?

You will be glad they are not there on one of those rough nights like u had last night that those pills are not in ur drawer.....it would seem that we would get stronger with time and we do but that strength is also what can be our demise if we are not careful....get a bit too self confident and think we can use like we did before we became addicted...and we can not...well most can not...i can not...u r gonna lick this thing cj!

You have lent strength to many on this site. I think you beat me awhile in the start, to flush my large stash. Love what you did for Ladyboop.

If you've made it to day 46 then it's definitely time to flush.  Beware the "pink cloud" effect where you're feeling like you're back on top of things.  Dangerous time for a slip.  Safest thing to do is get those things down the drain.  Don't keep em around whispering in your ear.

Oh and CadillacJack  I understand your point of view.  I think it's dangerous but I get your meaning about the control factor.  You want to kick it's a** instead of the other way around.  Be careful.  Those pills are sneaky f*****s.

You know I did that as well. It was not as easy for me to do, as it was you... I had worried878 in my ear yelling, YOU CAN DO IT GIRL, FLUSH THEM!!! If it was not for her. I would have never done it.... I would have eaten everyone of them..lol..lol..
And just for the record, It is day 6......

I kept mine, after receiving them in the mail, to prove to myself I was the boss, not the pills.  Sounds like you may be keeping yours "just in case". If that's true, do yourself a huge favor and get rid of them. I just did it out of basic hard headedness. It really ain't cool to keep them.

Good for you, Jack. I did the same. Pills around me and I didn't use or want them. I do think it is wise to get rid of them. As we get farther along the cravings go but the brain still plays tricks on us.

Kudos to you, Jack.

I'm on day 46 and I still haven't flushed my stash.
Don't know what is holding me back.

Some kind of warped rainy day thinking I suppose.

Thanks for the comments, but it really took little to do it. More for some good folks here who worry about such behavior. Like flushing nothing at all.

There will be some happy fish in your lake today!  Good day to go fishing. Jack you sound tough as nails but you also know these drugs have taken down bigger men than you. I think you made a wise choice, if your not going to take them then why have them at all. You are proving your point each day of your recovery and nothing can take that away from you. Now you dont have to throw out those loaded guns.
