Son detoxing from 60 mg how can I help him?

My son will be detoxing from Methadone from 60 mg. We moved to a state where his insurance doesn't cover it and he doesn't have a job yet. Anyway, he said they detox 25mg a day, he is on 60mg. The other state decoded 3mg a week.
He has been on it for 6 yrs. I want him to detox before he finds a job and so it won't be as difficult.
Is there anything I can do to help?

Hi  and after helping many people detox off this stuff a 25mg drop is huge and wont help the end result  so effectively he is jumping for 60  that is really to high but it is doable we have members who jumped from 120mg and made it clean  anything 20mg or over is to high in my opinion   right not get up to walmart and pick up a 3 in 1 vitamin calcium magnesum zinc  take 4 with brealfast and 4 with dinner  methadone drains the body of these minerals and replacing them really helps in a few days  stock up on a case of gatoraid  light food  jello is good rent a bunch of movies you wont sleep from that dose a hot bath will help most of the symptoms you may need to soak several times a day  the phyical detox will last 10 to 12 days off that dose of  methadone has a 1/2 life of 36 hours so it will take a good 4 days to kick in  I came off 150 but tapered for 8 1/2 months and that was ruff doing the way your son is going to to it takes perseverance and resolve but it is doable just be ready for him to get really sick for the next 2 weeks I dont know if you belive in God   I do when its 3am and your up shakking Jesus is all you got   prayer helps keep posting for support we all want to see him make it  it would also be a great Idea for him to come on and post  it really helps  may God be with your family.........Gnarly

Hi & Welcome!

You're wise to want him to detox before he gets a job because it will be difficult for him to do so with one. (He'll have to take time off). M'done is a difficult kick. It has a long half-life & stores in bone & fat tissues & must be given time to leach from the system. He can do it cold turkey but it'll be rough after 6 years. (How old is he?) With M'done, a slow taper is indicated.

I think that anyone here with any kind of experience with M'done will agree that the kind of drop you mentioned, 25 mgs. per day, is outrageous. Are you sure this is what they said? The 3 mgs. per week is more in keeping with regular protocol. Is there any way for you guys to reach out & research other clinics or prescribing Dr.'s in this new state of yours? Will state insurance pay for an addiction specialist? If not, could he possibly stay in the old one until he tapers down? M'done detox definitely requires that a good plan be put in place beforehand in order that it not be too hard on him.

How does your son feel about all this? Is he willing to do this thing? Was he thinking of it before or is it about his new circumstances?

Let us know what you're thinking & if you have any questions.

We're here & we're pulling for you both :)

Hi there- That's a rather large amount. Is there any way you can find someone in your new area to assist in a detox?  I've never heard of detoxing 25mg per day...Please do your research. Methadone is a tough drug to detox and it takes a while to feel better; maybe months.
