Still looking for a therapist..

Still looking for a therapist..

Well all...I'm still looking for a therapist. Looks like my insurance has 3 of them near me. None are addiction specialists. All are psychologists. Will general therapists be able to help with addiction therapy (as well as some other issues I have..like eating, etc), or is it just a "you'll have to go and see" thing?

Unfortunately with therapists it's just a go and see thing.  My advice is if you don't get a good feeling of connection, move on.  You need to be able to feel comfortable and supported.  It's also possible that one of them may not do addiction but they tend to be pretty well aware of their profession and will be able to refer you to someone who is better at addiction.  Good luck

Any way you can google the doctors on the web? Sometimes you get lucky. At the least you could call up, find out what school they went to, find out how they did!

I would suggest the same thing, go to all of them and see how you "feel" with them.    I have been in counseling for almost 15 years and it was a screening process for me too.  It really helps if you need one for any length of time that you really connect with.

Also, jot down some questions on paper to ask THEM!    Things like................about eating issues, addiction, medications.................try and get a feel about their attitudes on subjects.    My psychologist treats all the above and his attitude is very accepting and understanding so he is very easy to deal with.   He also has a sense of humor and he congratulates me on things......very important.

It is also good to try one of both sexes to see who you are most comfortable with, I had to have a male.

Best wishes in your search, it is a very important one too!!

Blessings,
Karen

First off..glad to see you back! Missed you..seemed like you missed a day sometime..anyway, the only computer I have access to right now is this one...it's a company laptop which has a firewall and doesn't allow IM clients..I'm not even supposed to be on here but I dunno if they'll ever look...it sucks because I want to chat with so many people on here..including you. Gawd, it sucks to be a newly graduated college boy and poor :)

Wonder if there's a way to get around this firewall? hmmmm? Will this thing explode if I do? I'm a geek, but have no idea about firewalls..

I asked hubby about the firewall issue ( as he installs them for a living).............he said yes there is but if you are networked, the server might alert the admin.

Are you networked on a server?

Yes, I live less than a block from work, so I use their network and computer..very cheap:) Sucks though because they call me at crazy hours of the day to do stuff. I need to move somewhere further away...Like Hawaii :)
