Suboxone and surgery

I have to have a C-Section on May 11th, two months from now, I just started suboxone and my sub dr said he would like to see me stay on suboxone through the entire pregnancy and after for a few months.  I have been reading on line and am scared because I may not get the pain relif I need.  I have had two and it is painful :(  My tolerance will be very high and they might not give me high levels of pain med to help :(  maybe I should go off the suboxone by that time ???  I don't want to be in pain.

Sometimes things may not sound right but that because not everyone has all of the info on kris in her case sub WAS the best choice and she need to be going by what HER doctors say before someone gives well meaning advice but in the end could be hurtful to her and her baby .

An epidural WILL be effective even with suboxone and for csections most hospitals do spinals where they add duramorph I think it's called (morphine in w/the numbing meds) and it works fine. I had no problems with my spinal either time even though I'd been on oxy's during my pregnancy (again under close dr. supervision)

Comments like these are why "arm chair" doctors on here worry me. People make rash judgments about Suboxone treatment and jump on doctor without knowing all the facts. People come on here and see these comments and take Sub treatment off the table because they've been scared away. the fact is that Kris had an addiction history that made Suboxone a valid and very brave choice for her and her baby. Please, let's not jump to rash judgments about people's recovery plans or their doctors when we don't have a thorough history or the medical license to make a proper diagnosis.

I'm sure an epidural would still be effective despite the fact you are on subs. I also think that you being put on suboxone for a short stint with percs was overkill. For such a short term use I'm amazed the doc even went for that but he's the doctor sooo..,

I don't know how suboxone works for pain, never had it. I just know that my last csection I was in intense pain and did require strong meds however I was off them within a week.

Discuss your fears with your doctors. have a safety net set up.

Kris is under strict medical care and has a complicated medical history.  Her doctors already have a plan for her regarding Sub.

Lisa becuase it was alot safer then what was going on she was going on and off sub the doctor wanted to stabeizer her for both herself and the baby ....

Both suboxone and subutex are cat C so instead of changing her med again he would be better staying right where she is

Buprenorphine can cause withdrawal effects in a person who is addicted to narcotics. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. It could also cause addiction or withdrawal symptoms in a newborn if the mother takes buprenorphine during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Buprenorphine passes into breast milk and may be harmful to a nursing baby. It may also decrease breast milk production. Do not use buprenorphine if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Suboxone

Pregnancy
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of SUBOXONE (a Category C medication) in pregnancy. SUBOXONE should not be taken during pregnancy unless your doctor determines that the potential benefit to you justifies the potential risk to your unborn child. Contraception should be used while taking SUBOXONE. If you are considering becoming pregnant or do become pregnant while taking SUBOXONE, consult your doctor immediately.

I had a percocet "love affair" for 10 weeks and dr put me on suboxone not sure why he didn't do subutex.  I am going to ask him on Tursday.  I guess the withdrawel anxiety was to much for me even though i have lots right now any way.

Is there a reason you are on sub while you are prego? I am just asking, really. I mean, it sounds like you are only worried about the pain you will endure. I think you may be too far along to just stop now. I doubt its safe for the baby. GaGuy is correct, do whatever the dr says. Good luck.

Hi Kris, well we have alot in common I too am pregnant and going to be having a scheduled c-section after alot of back n forth about it... I was going to try "natural" to avoid having to be on ANY PAIN MEDS post surgery.....I am not on sub. and have 9 mos clean as a matter of fact my 1yr sober b-day is when my baby i sdu june4!! Well after much consideration and talking w/ my ob,counselor, fiance about my main concern being on pain meds after (b/c) there is no wat around it,it's a major surgery and very painful!!!! But I spoke openly w/ my ob about it and we have discussed a semi-plan seeing how good/bad shape I'm in..I will only be on the percs for short period if doable then switch right to ib 800"s not sure if that will cut it for the pain but I don't want to be sent home w/ a bottle of pain killers!!! But now knowing the risks to the baby w/ me trying to go natural opposed to c-section (b/c my 1st was emergency and I was cut very long and deep) which gives a bigger risk to the scar tissue detaching from my uterine wall causing internal bleeding...blah blah so I have decided to not be selfish be strong and I have most imp. TALKED IT OUT w/ every 1 rather than keeping it a secret....My cousin just had a baby she was on subutex which is wat is normally given to pregnant women??? She had a c-section and her pain was managed just fine..she had gotten dwn to a very minimal amount of sub and neither her or baby had any w/d or probs!! She obviously is in recovery like myself and did tell me when she was sent home w/ 20 percs she took those as needed BUT they gave her the very min. amount b/c they knew she was an addict!! and her sub DID help w/ her pain so that long stuff being said, if u wean dwn to the tiniest bit poss it will benenfit both u and the baby and ur pain will be managed but they certainly won't overdue it w/ us addicts.... U do have to get another mind set and start being cautious about being on pain meds at all not will they give me enough???Of course they will manage ur pain but trust me u won't be getting high as a matter of fact they probably will offer u ur reg. dose of sub while in hospital they did my cousin..I find it odd they didn't put u on subutex w/ no blocker so when this time comes they can manage ur pain but trust in the Dr's u will be in good hands!!! What dose of sub are u on now??Have they started weening u?/If not u may want to as that's wat my cousin did and she felt fine and like I said the baby had no w/d's!! I really wish u the best and take care of urself!!!

I am not trying to find a way to get of the sub, I just happen to be one of those people that worry a lot.  The dr did tell me suboxone can help with pain, and that I really don't need to be worried that he would work with my OB.  Since the day will be picked out there can be a plan put into place like you guys said.  Getting high is not even on my mind, I just want to feel whole again.  I want to wake up in the morning with out feeling anxiety or sadness.  There is not one morning that goes by I don't feel bad.  I never feel good in the morning.  I am not sure what is wrong with me

You will get the pain relief need we have had mothers on sub that have had babies by c section honestly Kris its sounds lie use are looking for reasons to go off the sub so you can get high .you are not the first mom to be they have had on sub that has have had to have a c cections. You need to be getting recovery care and change your mind set. You needs to stop finding reasons why you sould get off the sub and consintrate on the on the one big reason to stay on it your BABY you have said to me if you were not on the sub you most likely would contue to keep going on and off the oxy  so how could you even consider going off it .... You need to start looking at the positive parts of having your baby and staying stable on the sub  ..

That sounds like a great plan. Go against your doctor's advice and go off the Sub just because of some reading you've done on the internet. Look, this is the disease talking, and it's trying its damnedest to get you back to using. Doctors are not idiots. People really jump on them on this forum especially because they think they caused their addictions...but, they will know exactly what to do. It's possible your doctor may ween you down a week before. Or they may give pain relief from general anesthesia or an epidural which are independent of opiates. Regardless, the best thing to do is trust your doctors.
