I have to agree with u..sub w/d was and is a total *****! U have to taper and to an really, really small dose at that! I don't even think drs should be allowed to call it a taper b/c it is rediculously slow! Hang in there, I did the sub c/t went from 24mg to 0 in about 1 1/2 weeks and it was hard, but it can be done!

Actually, there have never been any "maintenance" clinical studies for subs. It was never intended to be used in doses so high or for so long. It was intentionally designed as pain management without euphoria. Opiate recovery was accidentally discovered. The longest study ever performed was a six month trial, and only one of those exists. Most clinical studies are based on one month. Doctors decided to use subs long term and nobody stopped them, though it has never been studied for that method of use. Trial and error has taught us much about it, like the example of the last post. But is also why doctors say there is no withdrawal or mild withdrawal with a taper, taken 6 months or less is where they gt all their information. Anyway, just some interesting facts.

I personally think subs should be only used for heroin, fentanyl, methadone, and the stronger opiiates and high dose chronic relapse people, especially if used more than a month. So, I beleive there is a time and a place for everything, even subs and methadone. I felt like you do about sub about methadone during my months of detox, and still do in some ways. I would choose sub over methadone maintenance any day, even though there is "maintenance research on methadone. The methadone model is how they use subs, as if it is the same drug, they are dry different. Folks tried to talk me out of subs, people scared me about subs, and I didn't take then long enough, 20 days. I truly think I would be dead today without having used them, but shoukd have used the 3-6 months for a 250mg street methadone addiction. It is unfortunate doctors have been fooled and undereducated by the pharm research scientists. It is difficult to get accurate info about subs from doctors or anywhere for that reason. The addicts who have been guinea pigs have the best info. My doctor said I needed to be on subs two years for them to work. When I asked for research to explain that, he scoffed, because there isn't any. One good thing about being bipolar, I get manic and learn a lot. I have seen most all the studies open to the public.  There is no evidence about sub maintenance, only testimonies of addicts who were experimented on in public. Much like methadone, sub has caused much hearts l ache and relief, we just have to use them right once we know.

Anyway, the real issue is what to do now that we know whT we know? What dose you at, how fast you been tapering, and are you taking any vitamins, minerals, aminos, and electrolytes to help symptoms and healing? I would not have recommended subs for your rocecet addiction, and definitely not for 7 years. I agree that nobody should be prescribed sub that long. If it is needed that long, needing them that long is a failure in aftercare IMO. Your doctor probably didn't know there was a withdrawal or addiction to subs, but we know better. Hang around, ask, comment, and make some friends. You'll have this behind you.

Oh, I have one example of long term sub use that is appropriate. My best friend has been on them 8 years, he is a lifer with sever pain from a broken neck. Him being at. 1800mgs of Oxy and in a coma by the time he was given subs, it is a medical miracle he is alive. So that is an exception of my own opinion. Very seldom is there a black and white answer with addicts. We do what works to be free and stop regretting the last or who did what to us. We find the next move and march on sharing our experience, so others have more choices for their next decision. Keep on searching, you will be free.

Hi, im so sorry your feeling this way. But saying anyone on subs longer than a month, is playing with fire, is a very big statement to make.
I was on 32mg a day for almost 2 years and am now over 7 months clean. Can you see a doctor about a taper plan, or follow the thomas recipe below.
Subs were initially designed for long term benefits, not short term. Thats why the program is called Maintenance. The only thing that made me quit my heroin addiction, was the subs. It gave me an opportunity to see what life could offer me not going out scoring everyday. I had all my bills paid, a daily routine, energy and motivation, and a clear head. Once i knew i was strong enough to say no to drugs, thats when i knew it was time to come off subs. This is the way the program was intended to work. I dont think coming off subs is easy by any means, but you must want it so bad to succeed. Dont worry about the doctor who prescribed you the subs, we cannot blame them for things not working out with us, but i agree the lack of info given to anyone who prescribes subs is misinformed on just how intense they can be.  Sub use is quite contravercial and i get both sides of the arguement. Success with some, but not for others. If a correct taper is done, you are not soposed to feel intense withdrawal like we get from our drug of choice. And its advised to go 1mg or lower before jumping. Slow and steady on subs. Please note i do not wish to offend you, so please do not take what i have said the wrong way. But you will scare people if you tell them they are not wise to be on subs longer than a month. Us addicts are very emotional people at times and can hold on to some posts they read and it frightens the hell out of them. Good luck, we will always try to help you.
