Suboxone use

Suboxone use

Son is an addict.  He was in detox a couple months ago and reports that he has NOT been using opiods for more than a month.  He wants to start on suboxone because of craving the opiods.

Does anyone have an opinion on using Suboxone for a person who is actually not actively using?

He has in the past used suboxone off the street and says it was helpful.

We're confused--will a dr. prescribe suboxone for someone who isn't using.

What is involved in getting this medication---monitoring, testing, how much time going to the Dr for this as well

Thanks

I think you should read some posts relating to sub w/d's and the uses for it.. i think it will give you the answer that you are looking for which in my opinion is a big big NO!!!!!!!
someone not activly using is looking for a crutch and an easy way out! my cuz was addicted to Heroin for a couple of years and tried to get back on the sub after being clean for a week his addiction cousler asked his mother and she laughed in his face. He is now 3 weeks clean and with no sub.. all other 3 times he was in treatment and useing sub when he got out he went back to the H!

What about putting him on naltrexone or an implant.  It should stop him from doing the drugs again.  I know they have daily pills or implants.

It might be something to explore.

Good luck

You definitely want to re-consider using subxone for someone who is technically "clean".  Suboxone would help for cravings, but it is a very strong opiate and very addictive - quitting us much more difficult that other opiates.  I think that Sjoggie's suggestion about a naltrexone implant or pills is much better.  Naltrexone will block the opiate receptors in the brain and help with craving very well.  If your son was on Naltrexone and took an opiate, it would completely block the opiate - reinforcing not using because there would be no reward for using.  Naltrexone implants are put in the belly fat and last between 6-12 weeks, but they are still not used widely.  Do some research on what may be available in your area - If you are close to VA, I can give you some information on where I got one.  Best of luck to you.
