Surgery in early sobriety

I am in early recovery but have kidney surgery coming up on Nov12th I never really saw what was great about pain meds I know I will need them. Here's where it gets weird , I am nervous about an addiction to them forming but I am kind of excited to have them.

what type of kidney surgery?  r u having a kidney removed?  many kidney surgeries are done laparoscopically with little pai  involved..u will hardly be able to c the hole they put the scope in and most go home the same day..if u r having reconstructive surgery or kidney removal due to cancer, then that is a different story..these days with the new techniques,, surgery doesnt always mean pain afterwards..a bit of discomfort..but again it depends on the procedure...for instance if u have blaader cancer and they r gonna use ur intestine to form a new bladder..that is a painful surgey requiring plenty of ain meds..even with stones these days they keep narcotic doses light cos theynarcs cause more problems for kidneys than r worth it for pain relief

if ur surgery is a major one/the type where u spend the night in the hospital or more than one night..then hand ur pills over to someone u trust to dole them out to u when u need them for pain

bad sign is that u r excited to get pills...did u mean that?  u probabaly did some hard work to get clean..i would be feeling more dread vs excitement over getting pills again...30 pills that they will probably give u is not worth getting into that vicious cycle again..i am not sure of ur history..i am taking it that u had no aftercare included??? these r the things/surgeries/stress/depression/loss etc that send us back to square one...be safe

Thanks for your response. My doc says that I will be in the hospital for 5 to 7 days and they have to remove my lowest rib to get to my kidney and he will remove half of my kidney sew it up then sew up the flank incision. I have been in recovery with both meetings and an outpatient program. In the last 13 months I have used twice the last time being almost three months ago. It helps take some of the fear and power out of situations if I talk about it. I stopped using d/a because my life was devestated by them. I do however have an addict brain that wants to manipulate any chance to get loaded. Make any sense?

I know exactly what you mean. I had back surgery a few years back and hadn't had a pill for a few weeks as my neurologist said I had to stop taking them a few weeks before the surgery. I was on vicodin for about a year before that. I couldn't wait for the surgery just so I could get some more pills. After I was discharged the day after the surgery I was prescribed darvocet. It was my doc so I was a little disappointed. I actually only had to use them for about 5 days as I decided I didn't want to go through the withdrawals again. So, this being said, just be careful and only take them as needed for the pain. I'm not sure if kidney surgery will be as painful as back surgery but it's surprising how fast our bodies heal. Just keep telling yourself you're only gonna take them for pain and not for the high. If you have to have someone hold on to them for you. Just remember how bad withdrawals are and you know you don't want to go through them again. Stay strong and best of luck with your surgery!

Darvocet is addictive to isn't it? I am alittle scared to say the least 50/50 odds of cancer. I am doing a lot of future tripping. Good to know I am not alone with the assbackwards thinking.

Yes, darvocet is addictive as it is also a opiate. It is one of the weaker ones but still just as addictive. It's normal for us addicts to think about and get excited about any chance we have of getting our meds. It's something we will always have to deal with and find a way not to use. I know with your surgery you will probably have to use something so that's why it's important to have someone hold on to them if you can't take them as prescribed. Lord knows I can't! I pray that your surgery goes well and it does not turn out to be cancer. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. My prayers are with you but I'm sure it will all turn out fine!
