Tapering off valium

I was prescribed Ativan,5mg 3x a day for 18 months, then was switched over to Diazepam at 10 mgs a day (i cut the tablets in half and take 2.5 mg every 6 hours for GAD), I dont want to be on this anymore even though I am going thru tough times.
I tried to cut back to 5 mgs a day, one at noon, one at midnite but had panic attacks, jitters and trouble sleeping.
Now I am back to  the 2.5 every 6 hours.
Compared to others Ive read on here I am not taking a high dose, and havent been on them for as long.
What is a safe taper?
Due to the other things in life right now,I really dont want to deal with a "withdrawal" also.....is it true it could last for years?

cutting your dose 50% is NOT good, period. don't do that!

you need to do this slowly and gradually as tolerated and under the direction of a doctor.

luckily, diazepam is the drug of choice for a taper. now simply tell your doc your plans and work out a taper with them.

I tapered off of Valium with the help of a dr. friend.

If this were me I believe that I would try 2.5 three times a day for 10-14 days.

Then I think I would try 2.5 twice a day for 10-14 days.

Then 2.5 one time daily, probably mid to late morning 10-14 days............then off all.

I am NOT a Dr. I suggest you talk to a pro. before you try this.

Whatever you do, don't cold turkey this......siezures can happen.

6 weeks or so should be all it takes.
