ADDICTION: SUBSTANCE ABUSE COMMUNITY
The main reason

The main reason

As each day passes and recovering very well I am asked this question by some of my loved ones and friends. The question is "why did you abuse prescription drugs and why did you do them for such a long period?" It is still hard for me to answer that question and maybe I will come up with the reason as more days of clean time progress. Do any of you that have a little bit of clean time also have that question brought upon you or do you ever ask yourself this one? I know everyone has a different answer, but any tips would be of utmost gratefulness. Thanks Mike in nc 118 days....

For me I felt like I could handle every thing else in my life almost loosing my son as he was hit by a car not paying attention it was no ones fault but well I started feeling so guilty being a mom u know its u that is to keep the kids from hards way no matter what. I was in an abusivie relationship and to make a short story short I just started poping one or here and there and then decideded wow I really like the rush and just kept doing it. I feel now how stupid I am for not thinking that what I am doing could hurt people that I truelly love make them homeless cause I was getting to the point of using our rent for my next fix. I sit here on my day 1 of being clean and thank god its not as to the part that alot of have been dealing with but I am scared I hate feeling so damn tired I did this for what to have 30 minutes of a rush and then have tons and tons of bills to add up for the rush it gets to be needing so much money. I hate what I have done and I now relize that I have to pull a head and see what the next thing is cause I do deal with chronic pain on and every day now what. I guess I can only do one thing at a time. Make sure I make it thru the W/D with out dying or at least feeling like I am I am not sure if this answered ur question but it does come from the heart

You'll always beat your head against a wall trying to explain addiction to someone that's not an addict. Just tell them to be grateful that they don't understand. However, the easiest way I've found to describe it is to explain how addiction works on the pleasure pathways in your brain..much like the pathways that the brain uses to require air and water. I tell people that drugs to us were like air and water...a basic need. They either get it or they don't.

Do these same people smoke cigarettes, because it is the same type of addiction.Nicotine stimulates dopamine and so do opiates.Dopamine is the reward and pleasure chemical in the brain.
We do not think of cigarettes as as bad an addiction because they are legal to buy,but is is the same type of addiction
If cigarettes were declared illegal or would need a Rx we would be having the same discussion about them and spending mucho money to obtain them.
We do spend a lot of money for cigarettes, but more for opiates.
On second thought maybe we spend more for cigarettes.

Same with alcohol too, in my opinion, it is a drug and just because it is legal, no less addicting...

Thank you all for your insight on this tough question. Maybe I should not be so hard on myself and maybe or maybe not some day the answer will come out, but as of right now I really and honestly do not have one and that does come from the heart. Thanks again for your help,,, mike in nc, god bless
