To people Quitting Diluadid or any hardcore Opiate

by bobKidneyStone, May 15, 2009 09:51AM
Hey people. I have been reading a lot of posts that worry me. Bad withdrawals for more than a week??? Some over a month??? This is way too long!!!  After week one it's not a cake walk; but no one should be suffering or in agony.

My Question is/comment is: Is everyone printing out and following a good Detoxify Kit? They are out there. A good one is the "Thomas Recipe" or basic as "McDermott's Do-It-Yourself Detox" (not as detail, but good.) There are many out there. Do a search, read a few, and talk to your family Dr or find a kind Dr. I brought the detox kit into my Dr and went over it with him. He even learned a few things.

I get Kidney Stones and last time was put on 8 MG of Diluadid every 4 hours from 2/15/09 to 4/29/09, boosting this with grapefruit juice and frequently adding 10-30 mgs of Oxycodone for breakthrough pain. That’s includes IV at the hospital a few times. Well over 2 months HEAVY Diluadid (Hydromorphine) use.

With this regiment week one was pretty awful but doable; and I survived without taking more opiates or the ER or rehab. Week 2 I felt 75% most of the time near 100% for a few hours after exercising. The following is a combo of a few I mentioned and a few I found online:

I quit Cold Turkey Diluadid and Oxycodone the last week this April 09; I was hit with hell on earth withdrawals. First 72 hours: the freezing/burning skin, all fluids and solids leave the body, violently, out of body experiences, complete loss of ego and identity. Second 72 hrs those symptoms ease up and its RLS, soreness, insomnia, crawling flesh, emotions jumping from crying to extreme rage as Ego and Identity return etc...

See you Dr. There are non-narcotic perscriptions helpers for many symptoms such as Klonopin for sleep/RLS, Clonidine for sleep/crawling skin, and cold sweats. They may advise an Anti-depressent for a few months.

I did it with: First 72 (Day1 to 3) hrs Pedialite popsicles and boost or ensure high protein and OTC anti-nausea medication to keep the fluids down and keep hydrated. You feel so much better after being hydrated. Hot Epson Salt baths help ease the skin crawling and skin burning/freezing and RLS. DR. Supervised Clonidine and Klonopin will help with the anxiety, RLS and sleep. Though I started withdrawal on a Saturday and Didn't see my Dr till Monday. My Aunt is a RN and supervised my Clonidine and Benzo replacement for Klonopin over the weekend. Start the B Complex with lots of water/ Gatorade/pedilite as soon as possible. This will flush the toxins out quicker.

Hop on forums for support. Read, Watch movies. Cry whenever you feel the need during the first week. It helps reset hormones and releases endorphins. This will decrease as you add exercise.

After the first 72hrs (day 4 to 6,7 or 8)  as you are able to keep stuff down immediately add some fruit, antioxidant berries, saltines crackers, lean as can be chicken breast, more Boost or Ensure High Protein, and start the following vitamins: B-complex, a Good Multi, L-Tyrosine (really helps with the malaise) Advil, in the AM with a Boost/Ensure. At night time: Fish oils, Cod liver oil, Vit E, Vit C, Imodium (immodium) A-D (not only stops the diarrhea, eases withdrawal) Klonopin, Clonidine a sedating Antihistamine. Again CLEAR THE VITIMINS AND MEDS WITH YOU Dr. Especially the Klonopin, Clonidine and antihistamine. Get an EAR Acupuncture if you can afford it/ have access to it. Again, You MUST talk to your Dr. about the Clonidine: it lowers your blood pressure; and while most people in detox, your blood pressure gets high week one, Anyone with low blood pressure or ALREADY on another Blood pressure med this can be very dangerous. See about switching to Clonidine for a week or 2 if already on another Blood pressure lowerer.

During Day 4 to 8 keep up with the 2X per day Epson salt baths and ease up on the Clonidine and Klonopin (talk with family Dr.) and towards day 8-10: 3-6 mg of Melatonin and a good antihistamine/ sleep aid such as Doxylamine/succinate will get you to sleep. Also, Day 4 begin exercising as directed by Dr. Can't stress this enough. In the morning 1 to 2 hrs after your multi V, B complex and L-Tyrosine you CAN will yourself to exercise. Yoga, Tai Chi, Long walk or Run and Stretching. This will wake your body up to produce endorphins. Something it has NOT produced the entire time you have been on opiates. This will also cleanse the body and sweat more of the toxins out. Again; you will not want to exercise; but you must will yourself too. After you will feel a lot better for a few hours and it helps transition you into a livable week 2. Get a massage.

Week 2 start adding in Veggies slowly each day. See if you can get off the Clonidine as soon as possible. It will make you dizzy and tough to exercise. If you continue the exercise, stretching, Epson salt baths, Vitamins, Fish oils and stick to a diet of: berries, melons, super lean chicken breast, OJ, 8-10 glasses of water, veggies, small amounts of whole grains(i used just proBiotic cereal and whole grain pasta with lots of sauce for the tomato lycopene antioxidant and easy to digest veggie, limited fruit that is not berries or melons and Nothing with Sugar, your body will feel great by the end of week 2.

Week 3 same as week 2 exercising more and using the L-Tyrosine/ B-complex to fight the depression. Depending on your habit, drug and length of time: sometime between the end of week 2 and end of week 4, you will start to feel better than you have ever felt in your whole life.

I’m not saying this will be easy. Week one is HELL (but being hydrated, having the correct easing meds really helps); but do the correct things and the rest of the month will be livable with each day evening out and feeling better. Any questions I will check this form time to time or check other forums. So many people have been through this; we have collectively found ways to really speed up the detox process and ease the symptoms.

Do some research on Kratom. Still controversial, it helps if used infrequent!!! And sparingly. It is addictive. Do NOT use more than twice a week or replace one habit with another.

You all have the strength to beat this. You just may not know it yet. Get through it and you will be proud of how strong you are.

Peace and good luck.

You do have a pretty decent program put together - glad to read it. The people that you see with the long term withdrawal are usually mehadone / suboxone people and I will tell you that it takes a long time to detox from methadone. It has strong legs. You are one of the few that I have seen advocating kratom - but I did also use it and found that it helped. Glad to hear that you have things in order today!

I am curious about Kratom. Does it cause jitters like caffeine can? I am very sensitive to stimulants and avoid caffeine like the plague. I have read that Kratom can have a stimulant effect in lower doses ( up to 15 gm) and a sedative effect in higher doses (16 gm & more ) and I wonder what to expect if I try it.

I've been using elements of the Thomas Recipe, but have not taken L-tyrosene b/c I don't know if it will make me have jitters.  Since I began detox foods don't taste the same and I find it hard to make myself eat, so I drink a whey protein powder in water.
