Tramadol / seraquell

Hi - I am taking high doses of tramadol .  Have taken as much as 2000 in a day, now down to 800.  I have given my husband the pills to control a taper.  The other thing is in October I had a full manic episode and was prescribed seraquell (dose :400 mgs at bedtime)  My psychiatrist thinks the tramadol caused the mania.  I know the tramadol made it worse, but looking back I can see that I had some symptoms before the tramadol.  My father was also diagnosed as bipolar, so there is family history too.  Anyway, my question is, as I taper the tramadol, should I also taper the seraquell ?  To the extent that the psychiatrist is correct, and the tramadol caused the mania, will I no longer need the seraquell?  Or could the seraquell cause depression, once I don't have the tramadol to "balance off" the results of the seraquell?  On the other hand, I am now sleeping well at night for the first time in probably 15 years.  Thanks for any help you can offer. -- Jody

Thanks for the responses.  I am continuing my taper plan for the tramadol.

  here is the thing tramadol it works in two ways. One is to control pain the other is as a ssri antidepressant .antidepressants have been know is some individuals to cause manic like symptoms.Continue your taper. I would not taper the seroquel with out your doctors advice.
It would not be the seroquel causing the depression you were on a very high amount tramadol and it has raised your serotonin sky high now you are taking it away ,for many its causes depression.
You have done great coming off the tram keep going you can do it.

I would continue tapering off the tramadol first and see how you feel once you are thru with them.  If you see signs of improvement then talk with your doctor about coming off the serequel.          sara
