Tramadol Information (the truth) & my own story

I have a unique story to tell how I got into my current job or what drove me while being a bio and science major. My father got cancer when I was 4 years old from -- osteosarcoma. I watched him stay in bed when I was a little girl. He layed in bed for 1 ½ year after got  his leg amputated. He was in a  bad pain. Pain meds were not as advanced back in the late 70’s as they are today. I remember my mother counting the hours to give him his next dose. I was confused and heartbroken to see him lay in bed for 1 ½ year while developing bed sores. My mom stood by his side and I was a good child just  hoping my dad was going to get well one day. He never did. He died in pain while cancer spread all over and his medicine/ or lack thereof was just very little to help him die comfortably.

Now I  sell Ultram Er and Duragesic to Dr's legally. Also will have a new Scedule II drug called tapentadol that just got approved by FDA. There is a place for every drug out there and if the Dr's carefully choose the patients it would be ok. However, patients lie. Addicts know how to lie well. So i know there are people abusing them (Ultram ER)-cutting them to make them IM and taking more than 1 a day. One a day is the dosage of the ER.

And as with other meds you will have withdrawals even from it when discontinued. That’s why the patient has a say so too. If they don't want any side effects=no pharmaceuticals is the answer. Everything comes with a price. Some pay high price. I personally had bad withdrawals from Lexapro and getting off other MDD (Major Depressive disorder) drugs. I was put on them for pain. I made a choice to take them so I paid the price when I got off. Everyone needs to weight their risk to benefit portion. Drugs only are never a solution to any health problems.

The people should take matter in their own hands after leaving a Dr's office. Education is a must. Never leave an office and hope that your script will solve all problems. Research any med given before taking it. I know we hate the pain pills but we need to take responsibility for our own actions.

Research any med given before taking it.

Some things to consider about Tramadol generic for Ultram. Ultram in my opinion should be scheduled. Many of my docs keep it locked (samles with controlled subs.)Also its been out since early 80's and patent of brand expired very long time ago so many started manufacturing it as a generic and you can get it online. That even makes it more available for abusers. Then DEA never scheduled it be its very weak-in opioid component and AD it’s never scheduled. But when patient take a lot it makes it strong opioid. Its different chemical structure bc there is no synthetic opioid like in hydro and oxy. its just tramadol hydrochloride the substance stands in their own group.

So when patients ask for something less addictive they Dr's think-ok what will I give a pts that wants a similar pain relief as their hydrocodone but its weak--BAM Ultram ER. They (Dr's) don't have to deal with DEA and no drug testing-there is no test for it (i wish there was for the patients that abuse it to test the level).

In conclusion-Dr know the class, patients lie, and some Reps will say whatever to make it sound very safe. I say the facts and i show clinicals and go for a niche of patients. Low % of my new Rx's are for people that were previously on Lortab, Norco, or Oxy. They do not like it they want their buzz from the others. Also i really do think that not all reps or managers are good. They have some that lie to sell. Most do not. We have to support our msg with back up clinical info. Anything else you want to know please ask if i can help.I have a biology background with extensive knowlege in drug chemistry.

My point is there is a place for every drug out there. Dr need to screen pts and we as patients need to be honest. That would be a good start I think.

Sorry for the long post wanted to share

Very well said and super informative. It would be wonderful if doctors would become more knowledgeable, however. They know the class, but my dr. personally has told me over and over that there is absolutely no w/d from tramadol. He really isnt informed.
I actually started taking it with the intention of only taking it for a few days each month-for severe menstrual cramps. I quickly found out that you cant take it for 2 weeks and then stop. Thus, I was on my path of tram destruction................
I do agree also that patients should research any drug they put in their body, but the sad reality is that there are lots of people out there that have 100% faith and trust in their dr.s knowledge. My mother is 66, and she (as so many others like her) does not question her dr, ever.
I, however, take full responsibility for my own actions.  I didnt research tram until I was fully addicted. It was such a relief during those 2 weeks of excruciating pain, that I didnt want to question it.(I have pretty bad endometriosis)
So now I am terrified of what I am going to take in a week for the pain that is sure to come. I cant take nsaids due to stomach issues...so what now?  According to my dr. I should have stayed on tramadol.  if you have any suggestions it would be sooooooo greatly appreciated.
You knowledge is so helpful and I hope more people start taking responsiblity for their own health. My mom is on 20 prescriptions, and I worry about her because of this.
(But I dont have a degree so dont know anything)
Anyways, thanks for the words that needed to be said.     Suzi
