Tramadol Question

This question is coming from a response that I received from a seperate question that I posted. My Dr. has also given me tramadol  --- It does nothing for me (I don't think) and I though it is not addicting and not a narcotic. What am I missing here????

You are right.  Tramadol is horrible.  I have been off of it for almost 2 months, and it has been rough.

This is an old thread though, so if you have a question, just hit post a question in the green box at the top, and you will get a lot of support and answers!!! (you may already know how to do it!!)

Let me post my quick story (hope to be quick :) I was addicted to Lortab and Vicoprophen at different times of course and managed to come off after only a month of useage but it was hard. The 3rd day was the worse, the med is evil. On the 3rd day this demon will make you really deppressed, feeling almost suicidal and cause much much pain as well as chills and other side effects. Well after the 3rd day you are basically home free... But the 3rd day makes it worse because the Lortab is telling your brain that it needs the drug. It is the worse day. A good way to quit is to flush them so that you are not tempted to start back up on the 3rd day... Trust me the 3rd day is the worse, then subsides after that.

I have never been addicted to anything at all before these pain killers and then I have really bad pain and asked my DR is there anything better I can take besides Advil 800mg Anti-inflamitories and Tylenol that I will NOT get addicted to. I WAS LIED TO, OR MIS-INFORMED whatever you wanna call it and now it is just as addicted as the Lortabs and Vicoprofen.

I would say that it is slightly worse, which is pure hell. More deppressing, I have had severe sadness like I have no one in the whole world as well as the worse pain ever, not sleeping for 3 days and then getting 2 hrs sleep.. All in all it is harder to kick but don't know this, they only know what they read but some drs do know. I would say don't start. I am so upset because I sincerely thought these were non addicting but something that would really help me. I wish I read here first because right now I can't quit and the reason being is because I have a whole bottle. I will probably try and taper down and then get some Clonzine or whatever you call it from the doctor afterwards.

With Lortab withdrawel I went cold turkey and with no Clonzine which is suppose to help withdrawels. Next time I will go to the doctor and get something to help me sleep and soothe the withdrwels. It will be easiler... Over all it can take up to a week for withdrawel symptoms, 3 days the worse and then you may have restless legs and some pain for the next few weeks but don't give up just flush the pills or wait until you run out so you won't be tempted to take any more pills and you will be fine. I honestly would have never taken these if I thought they were not addicted.

Here is something to note. Anything other then Anti-inflamitories like Advil Aleve, and other anti-inflamitories or Nsaids or tylenol is addictive.....Anything other then those!!!!

Anything basically that you CAN'T buy over the counter is addictive (besides nsaids and anti-inflamitories and ibuprofen works better then that. You can take 4 pills 800 mg OTC for pain and it does help some, it won't help chronic severe pain but will help mild-moderate pain. The bottle sais take 2 but actually 4 is presctiption stregnth and you can take 800mg ibuprofen 2-3 times per day max. I find that taking two does nothing for me.

Good luck - Anyone reading this, please don't take Tramadol because it does not work as good as Lortabs but the withdrawel is harder and longer (slightly most of the time) but still anyone knows withdrawel knows it hurts.

There is a vaccine that is a stronger anti-inflamitory for pain you can get but they are only for once in a blue moon because they have some kind of bad effect if taken regularly. You can also get them in pill but only to take for 1 week. It's not addicting but doctors dont want to prescribe them because they are bad for your kidneys if taken on a regular basis.

I can also say that tramadol is addicting.  I have been addicted to opiates for years, and went about 6 mos just taking tramadol to keep from getting "pill sick"  Even when I went off the tramadol I was sick.  So because it is opiate based, it is very addicting.

having spent a week terribly ill trying to kick them, I can attest they are definitely addicting and VERY hard to kick...and do not quit cold turkey as you could be susceptable to seizures.

Most doctors do not know about the addicting potential of tramadol. They rely on the reps and drug inserts which say it is less likely to be addicting.and because the government has not classed it as a narcotic they feel they have chosen a good alternative to opiates. They have been given bs by big pharma and are often disappointed when I tell them that tramadol is really a narcotic even if not classed as such.I understand their position because aside from tylenol, antiinflammatories and narcotics there really are no other pain relievers. So when a new one comes out that is said to be non narcotic of course they want to prescribe it and everyone wants to try it.

Tramadol is a synthetic opiate that acts on opiate receptors and also has an antidepressant action like effexor. It is not classed as a narcotic but it really is.The pain relief is not as strong as other opiates and there is a tendency to take much more than prescribed. It builds a tolerance and the antidepressant action is very hard to withdraw from.It is a sneaky drug that can grab you unawares and you can show withdrawal in as little as a month of use in doses of up to 400mg/day.I know the doctors say it is not addicting, but it really is.If it is not even helping your pain, just don't take it and use something truly non opiate.
