Trying to stop taking vicodin... how do I do that?

RCG
About 2 years ago I was in a car accident that led my doctor to prescribe vicodin for me. I feel I am addicted and after many attempts at not taking vicodin I do not know what to do. I am in pain but something tells me that it is my mind that is making me think I am to justify taking vicodin. What can I do to get off of this stuff that is making me depressed. I am too embarassed to tell my family for the fear of them looking at me as though I am a weak person, and I would like to go to counseling without them knowing! Throughout this time period I have remained very active, working out 5-7 times a week in an effort to get my mind off of it, but with no success! Your input is appreciated, thank you!

Sigh....I have been taking vicodin for almost a year...I take 2-4 10 mil. Every since my daughter was born I have horrible back pain. The dr keeps giving it and I keep taking it. I dont know if Im addicted but yes when I am about to be out...it makes me anxious. Its like when I first started taking them I had to take 2 to get moving in the moring and Id be wide awake and happy. Now I take the 2 and it makes me talkative but not as motivated. I dont know what Im looking for....so feel free to comment. Please.

I have been taking 20-30 10mg norcos for 5 years in July and never think i will see the day where i dont take any.  I am sure I will be dead before too long as my body is begining to shut down and react to the years of abuse.  If only someone would have told me how bad it would get when i began taking these at 16 I would not be in this situation now.  Too everyone who is thinking of stopping after 2 years or less please do so now.  Dont think of excuses to continue taking them just look at yourself in the mirrow and really examine your life and where it is.  Chances are you will either break down or the medicine has numbed you so much you will just feel nothing.  Goodluck to all you and I hope you do better then me.

I have been taking 3  10mg Vicodin daily for 2 years. I am running out and have no refills. For some reason, my doctor is not returning my call or refilling the rx. She may be out of town. idk. I plan to cut to half the amount until I run out. Would it be safe to stop cold turkey then? What effects can I expect?

For the people who want to quit without shame and full support from others I would suggest AA OR NA meetings . There you will learn about the addiction and SOLUTION to quitting pain killers.  My prayers go out to all.
