Ultram

Hey guys, my Dr. gave me Ultram to take for this weekend before I get my epidural injections on Monday. I can't take my motrin because it could bruise my back and cause bleeding. If I take this as prescribed, should I be OK? He prescribed me 125 50 mg., that is a lot.I will not take all those, what do you guys think?

Wow !!  I was prescribed Tramadol, for severe shoulder pain, but never took them in fear of intense withdrawals, which I experienced getting off Klonopin (long story),.

Wishing all those, experiencing withdrawals a speedy, full recovery.

Hello "avisg"  and "suzipen" ... wish I knew your real first name :>

I really appreciate both of your responses.  It helps to actually speak to a person who has been addicted so I can see the other side of this horrible coin of addiction.   I really have gone through this with my daughter for about 12 years, started at the age of about 14.  When she became pregnant with her daughter she was dating her current husband, who has been an addict since the age of about 12.  They met at a "party," dated, she got pregnant and "miraculously" they both straightened out (or appeared to) for about 3 years.  They both got good jobs, bought a home, nice cars, paid bills, etc.   Then about 3 years ago they must have went to a party with old friends and started taking prescription pain pills to get "high."  She has never been this bad ... its the worse I've ever seen her.  And, of course, its been a downward spiral since then and my granddaughter is now in the middle of their addiction.  I do realize from all I learned about addiction is that they have to want to get better.  I want that so bad for them.  I guess I'm not understanding why they don't see their lives are spiraling out of control, it's dangerous and why they don't want or see the need for help.  I also don't understand why they desire the drugs.   Why do they want to escape reality by being constantly high?   Yes, I have thought about taking my granddaughter from them but Jayda loves her mother and father very much and crys to be with them.  Also, my daughter resents the fact that I even desire to take her for safety's sake because my daughter thinks she's doing "nothing wrong."   I hate the arrogance of her.   However, I am a Christian who loves the Lord and I have God to pray and talk to and I do believe He will break their bondage to the addiction of drugs.  It's the "waiting" for the day she and her husband are free from this bondage that is the hard part.   I wish I understood why she feels the need to take drugs.   What drives that need?     I actually grieve for her that she is living this tortured life.   I actually feel like I'm watching her die slowly and I've actually planned funerals in my head for her, my granddaughter and her husband.  I grieve for her as if she's already dead.   I cry as a grieving parent.   I long for the day I can have a normal mother-daugther relationship with her.  Well, sorry for the "ranting."   I just need someone to vent on.   I guess I'm looking for "answers" as to the "why" she's doing drugs and her husband too.   What drives this desire?   Can anyone give insight to what drives the craving for the drugs?    Thanks all for the advice!   God Bless you all!  Jennie

Jennie,
I know It is very hard to understand addiction can be very destructive .For most an addict has to hit rock bottom before they get help. The problems is every addict has a different rock bottom.Unforuntaly is much as you want them to get help they have to want it.
However what you can do is advocate for your granddaughter.Have you thought about taking her in until they get help it sounds like a dangerous situation for her.

Hi Jennie,
I truly feel your pain and worry. I have been addicted and I know how I reacted to family members trying to help me.It wasnt great. You also have a granddaughter to worry about.
Finally, just one day, I looked at my 3 kids and realized what I was doing to them. It was so hard to admit what I was doing, and that it was out of control.
I have asked another member to also post to you. She is very insightful, and I think will be able to help you.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family. This is tough, but with love and support, they can overcome this.
I will check to see if anyone has responded to you.
Hang in there, suzipen

My daughter and son-in-law are extremely addicted to Oxycontin, Roxicodone and Xanax ... they take all 3.   Their lives over the past 2 1/2 years has completely deteriorated.   They drive while under the influence of this junk too.   They are almost comotose 50% of the time.  They have a 5 year old daughter (my granddaughter).   I now believe they are shooting some of this medication into their vains.  They, at first, would not admit any addiction to any drug at all.  Over the last 6 months they have admitted the addiction; however, they may very rarely say they want to stop, but then get agitated if you push the subject.  Have been very loving and supportive, but also very angry at them when they don't want to seem to even desire to stop.   My husband and I have offered help a million times and they know we would help in a minute!    If they don't stop soon, I believe that both or one of them will die from overdose or car crash ... or kill someone else too.   Does anyone who has been addicted know of a way to talk to them about getting serious about getting help without making them mad.   We have been as non-judgemental as possible.  Why don't they want help???   They have had accidents, losing their home, are not paying any bills, had electric shut off, lost a job, etc.   What will it take???  Please give any advice to a really worried and stressed out mother and father who has never been addicted to anything and does not understand it.   God Bless

No matter how it is sugarcoated, and it is made to sound less potent than morphine........JUST DONT take it.
It has a nice little anti-depressant mived in with it as well. Bet your dr. didnt know that either. Most of them dont.
I feel for you, but I truly hope you will get rid of them asap. Its just not worth it. Trust me, the w/d are worse than anything out there! I have known people who get addicted/dependent very quickly.
Good-luck to you

Hi! I was on Hydrocodone before he put me on Tramadol. This is 3years ago now but for me the Tramadol did not work very well at the dose i was at. So of course i started medication myself by bumping the dose up. Very bad idea for me i was up to 6-8 50mg a day and ran out early. This was pretty much a year after my accident so i was very ignorant to narcotic pain meds.My doc gave me as many as i wanted. Well i ended up in the worst kind of w/d i ever had. Since my doc was not read up on them he did not know what was going on with me. Ran every test in the book until i was refered to an differernt doc. after 4 weeks and she spotted it in 5min. So i was going thru cold turkey w/d whitout knowing it. Anyway i would listen to the other posters here and also 125 pills are to inviting. Hope this helped and good luck. Thanks, f1swede

I also heard you can get seizures from them.  And also I am so sorry to hear about the end of your relationship.  He sure picked a really bad time for that.  I have a few choice names that I would like to call him but I am sure they will get deleted from here.  So you know what I mean.  if you do decide to take any be careful and take a few as possible and stop as soon as possible.  I would rather talk plain old tylenol I find tramadol / ultram don't do much for pain.  I tried them and they did sweet f all.  couldn't even get rid of a headache with them.

Tramadol (Ultram) is a mu agonist that is substantially less potent than morphine as an
analgesic (more than 100 fold less active). This product also has peripheral analgesic
actions. Tramadol has high oral activity and is metabolized by cytochrome-mediated
oxidative-O-demethylation to the corresponding 3-phenol which is more active than the
parent drug. The phenol is glucuronidated and eliminated. A fraction of the tramadol
dose is also metabolized by cytochrome-mediated oxidative-N-demethylation to less active metabolites.
Tramadol is Not a narcotic , but is synthesized.

two words. flush them. you know you won't be taking them for pain if they are staring at you. one pill down, and that path your brain has created for addiction, will be opened right back up. endorphins galore. you get one bit of pleasure from that first pill.... bye bye to the other 125. good luck babe. you've made it so far! keep going!

at the end of my heavy drug abuse i didn't take pills any more to relieve pain, i took them to get high. i was on tram's too and they are bunk if you ask me. they didn't take away my pain, they didn't make me high and the w/d was worse than the hydro's, what's the point. my addict brain was like "what's the point, i didn't even get a pay off." they are not worth it. i know what chronic pain is, i struggle with it every day and still struggle to not use pills, it's one day at a time. i would stay away from the tram's if i were you. god bless, christina

Thanks guys, I know what I need to do! I was only gonna take them for a few days but I guess I'll only take them if the pain is completely unbearable. I'm in a bad situation too, my other half just told me he doesn't want to be w/ me anymore..............bummer. Thanks for the advise, I'm trying to stay positive.   -Beth

I am only on day four off hydro's myself, but I can tell you that Ultram/tramadol is a horrible idea. I tried them once when trying to quit hydro's. They seemed to me to be more addictive than the hydro's. The w/d's are much worse for some reason too. If I were you I would talk to my Dr. Addicts and narcotics of any kind are ALWAYS a bad idea.

Honey....I agree with all the above posters. Ultram/tramadol is highly addictive....and yeah, the w/d are worse than opiate w/d. Ultram is a synthetic narcotic---but has the same properties or effects as the hydros do. But there is something different with them...you can (AND WILL) have a seizure if you take more than you are supposed to, which you probably will end up doing because its our nature....we all abuse pain pills, that's why we're here. Today is day #9 for me and I feel great. I can only speak for myself, but I know I wouldn't want a pill stronger than a motrin right now or for a long time. If you just kicked hydros, please trust all of us when we are telling you Ultrams are a baaaaaaad idea. Ok?
