Valium is ok for sleep durring recovery right?

by Laroo, Feb 06, 2008 05:18AM
I was under the understanding valium was ok for sleep...Im still in my first week of recovery & only use 1/2 a day.
I went to an NA meeting today & they nearly died when I was honest with them about that..?  It really deflated me.
It was already HUGE for ME TO WALK into a room full of strangers & admit I've been using for 15 years (almost 1/2 my life) and then have some girl who used for 1/3 or that - tell me I should come back when I'm clean.?  I was SO MAD at myself for going.
Should I just not be honest or do I really have to wait till I never use a valium (that was never my drug of choice).  THis is the CLOSEST I've been in years & I want to go but, the RLS is so bad I still I need it to sleep.

Hey L....isn't valium part of the recovery similiar to xanax, etc?  I'm not an expert on this and haven't taken any other meds...but  thought many recovering were doing that...I sleep about 4-6 good hours and the 2-4 rough...meaning, I miss my rem :-(...

what's up with the group u went too? Never been there but it seems harsh that they would tell u to come back when you're clean...i thought it was open to anyone at any stage...

Peace,

Nick

PS...posted this in someone else's post that u responded too...must be the head buzzs :-)

I'm a little pissed at N/A right now.  You need to be encouraged not discouraged. That wasn't right.  You don't seem to be abusing the valuim, so just be careful.  You don't want to get it in your brain that you must have it for sleep.  I took Ativan during detox to help with sleep and anxiety.  You are doing good. Please don't let them discourage you.   Hugs   Mary

WOW sorry to hear .I would not give up on NA try another meeting .That was not cool.Valuim is addicting . Yes it is less addicting then Valium but addicting all the same . Try to use the Valium as little as needed  in the next few days you should not need it at all .Plz dont get discouraged you are doing GREAT.Dont give up on the NA try another meeting .

N/A is SUPOSE to welcome anyone at any stage of addiction. Still useing, thinking about quiting, withdrawing, recovering etc. Bad N/A group.
Don't be discouraged. You do what ever you have to, to get clean. And if taking a few Valium as needed to get you thru withdrawels... do it.   If there is a group of people gathered, any group, there will always be some or one that are trouble makers. It's a fact of life. Don't let them bother you, they have they're own issues.
Hang in there, your doing great!

I was givin Valium at night to sleep n xanax at day. Don't take Xanax did not like it. Valium I take it when I know I need 8 hrs of sleep I take 10- 20mg. Maybe twice a week.  My doc knows iam recovering.  He will only give me two month of it. Till my sleep cycle returns.

As long as you are not abusing the valium I think it's fine to use it. I had to use something to get me through the WDs. I used xananx for a month and ambien for 6 months to sleep. Now I have been off the Hydro/lortab for 11 months and I take no pills of any kind. WDs are horrible and more so for some people so you do what you have to just DO NOT abuse. Look at all the people on Suboxone and Methadone, They don't get bitched out for taking something everyday to get over their addiction, Your doing great do what's best for your recovery

Valium is o.k. to take during recovery, it's often prescribed because although it is a benzodiazepine, it is less addictive and more effective than some of the others in dealing with s/s of w/d.  Valium is often prescribed for muscular injuries and well as it's sedating or antianxiety effects, so it works well for w/d for those reasons.

I'm so sorry some a**h**e talked to you the way she did.  What really puzzles me though, is why no one running the thing didn't put her in her place.

This is quoted directly out of the NA book, chapter 2 "What is the Narcotics Anonymous Program..." The only requirement for membership, the desire to stop using."

The girl who said that to you was wrong and should know better...
I hope this doesn't stop you from returning...try a different mtg...as they all have a little different feel and you have to find one where you feel comfortable at.

I know it took a LOT of courage for you to go...good for you....keep on working it...you are doing a great job!!!

THANKYOU!!!!   I agree 100% with all that you wrote.
I'm going to try another group - yes, the girl should have been put in her place but, the women pull U aside after group & hand u # and ask u questions then.
I even told them I have a full bottle of Xanex here & not using it cause I know It's more addictive from what I read.
THANKS FOR HELPING - I WAS SOOO BEATING MYSELF UP!

JUST WANTED TO ADD - I REALIZE HOW EASY IT IS TO HURT US....SO BE CAREFUL.   I know right now I'm a MUCH NICER Person with sleep & if that means taking a valium I'm not going to beat myself up.
I might not jump into another NA meeting yet but, when I do I'm not going to mention it.  I was in a hurry to go so I could work on the mood swings & find out why but, not at the cost I felt yesterday.  I'll wait till I can stand up for myself better. :)

Do you have an alcohol addiction too. You should go to AA then. they will help. I have not drank for over 14 yrs. Started going to AA in Feb 1994 I got very invovled in the program. I did not drink at this time but was still doing cocanine and finally came foward with the truth I was doing cocaine. I relasped and drank 3 beers. I have not touched alchol or cocaine since May 2 1995. Just recently I finally came foward and told one of my AA buddles about the Norco and Valium the Dr gave me.for my back pain. They welcomed me and di not turn me away
All they wanted to do is help.
Go to AA their are alot more meetings then NA
