Valium withdrawal

Hello Everyone,
I have been reading some of the threads and can't believe how long it takes to get off valium.  My doctor didn't tell me!  I had a tonic clonic seizure 6mths ago and the neurologist suggested 2.5mg of valium every night as an anti-convulsant and because I wasn't sleeping.  Over that 6mths the dose increased to 10mg every night I guess because it stopped working at the lower dose.  I saw the neurologist 2 weeks ago, EEG almost normal and no more seizures so not epilepsy and come off valium slowly.  That was all he said.  So i decided to take 5mg for 4 days, 2.5 for 4 days and 1.75mg for 4 days and off.  All was fine until 4 days into having no valium.  Stomach cramps, dry mouth, feeling like a seizure was coming, not sleeping, twitching, rapid heart beat, sweating etc.  Just been to my doctors and he's given me more valium and to come off a lot slower.  He now wants me to stay on 2.5mg for a month.  Taken 2.5 mg today and not feeling any better!  I'm not happy.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks, AW

The medical community seems to practicing on automatic pilot which makes seeing patients faster and easier which in turn makes the pharmaceutical companies happy.      The pharmaceutical companies know this and constantly advertise their TV commercials asking you to ask your doctor,  which in turn makes broadcasting companies happy.     Can you say spokes in a big economic wheel?

It is shocking how doctors prescribe Benzo's.

For your seizures people can try a diet high in fat and protein but low in carbohydrates, this will convert your body to a state of Ketosis which will and as a result will fix up your Seizure Threshold.

For more info GOOGLE: "Ketogenic Diet"

Ask your Doctor about this and ask him why he resorted straight to pharmacological meds.

Interesting Fact: George Bush has share in Roche the company that makes Valium and Xanax, he then went to the FDA and made laws that made the drug more available.

hi and welcome, yes valium withdrawal has to be taken slowly, as with any benzo.  the stomache cramps etc your describing were the withdrawal symptoms,if you come off them slowly it stops the risk of seizures from it, i am addicted to benzos, and in recovery now, it took me a few attempts before i stopped, you will get there,  your first taper was too fast, so your dr. is being careful this time.everyone is different , so each taper plan varies,  your 4 days into having no valium was giving you normal withdrawal symptoms, they cant be totally avoided , you felt it because you got to 10mg, and had to drop your dose, you wont feel much better until the valium level evens out in your body, and when your dr. takes you totally off them you will feel slight withdrawals, but they wont last too long , you can do it , best wishes,  sudie
