Vicodin and Pregnant

Well, my bestfriend is 36 weeks pregnant. she has been taking vicodin since before she found out she was pregnant. she stopped use at 35 weeks, but is very concerned whether or not the baby will be addicted or show any signs of her mother's use when she is born. i guess my question is, will the baby go thru withdrawl (withdrawal) after birth or be addicted if she stopped 5 weeks before the baby is born?

Its hard to tell .I hope your Friend told her doctor about her use .If not she could be in a world of trouble .Its very important that the doctor knows if she is honest they will work with her if she chooses not to tell and the baby turns positive for usage the hospital well call in SS . For the sake of her baby she needs to be honest how much was she taking daily.

If she stopped 5 wks prior then no the baby will have already gone thru the withdrawl (withdrawal) in the belly.  However, stopping cold turkey like that when prego is not good at all!!!!!!  Who knows what kind of damage the withdrawl (withdrawal) in the belly did to the baby.  No doctor in his right mind would ever let a prego woman get off anything cold turkey, it is way tooooo much stress on the baby.  She needs to let the doctor know what is going on right away!!!
Sending prayers and thoughts your and your friends way

she did not cut cold turkey. i know that for sure. see, she lives with me and we are about a week apart on due dates. i ve been with her thru this whole thing and she di ween herself off. she went from taking 4 to 2 to 1 1/2 to 1/2 to none. it is sad, but addiction is uncontrollable at times. in this case, she was overwhelmed by the addiction.

Its takes longer for opiates to go out of your baby's system then your because its in the amniotic fluid I am not 100 % sure but I am pretty sure at 5 weeks before delivery it can still be there but let me do some checking with a member who is a neonatal nurse .

So at her worst she was taking 4 pills a day?  If that is true, then for sure the meds are out of the system.  I know what avisg is saying is true it does stay a little longer but not 5 weeks. Your friend would have to have been taking a lot of meds for a long time for that to be the case.  Yeah a 4 pill a day habbit is just the begining.  I hope she lets her doctor know because if not she is gonna get sent home from the hospital with a ton of narcotics. She will end up worse than she started.  The doctors have no problem writing rx for moms that just had labor. I have five kids and was sent home high every time.  Just warning you!!!

I posted my experiences earlier and got a warning email that someone thought I was saying that it was ok for a prego to take pillsand really I was just sharing but ?? It must have been the wording I really didn't mean to say what I was accused of it said that saying a prego should take pills wasdangerous and inappropriate but I didn't mean to say a prego should take pills as they shouldn't so I was just appologizing to who I offended

I read your post and it sounded ok to me.  I did not take it that way at all.  I thought you were just sharing your exp, which I thought is what we do here.  Maybe not?
