Vicodin vs Darvacet

by shelly405, Dec 05, 2007 11:17AM
Hi Gang,

I talked with my Dr. about the Vicodin and he suggested Darvocet for my back and neck pain. I am starting to hurt again - have been clean since Friday last, and it's now Wednesday. I feel great emotionally, but my body hurts. We also discussed Valium, but I HATE HATE HATE that stuff and refuse to take it unless I need an MRI. I was told that surgery is not an option and Motrin is not going to cut it, so basically it's "Pick Your Poison" I don't know anything about Darvocet - Please advise and help.

well i think darvocet is the way to go, because from my experience i got sick if i took more than prescribed, but with vicodin i seem to just keep taking them, i havent took any so far today trying to quit all together, but im pretty sure darvocet make you sick if you try to get high off them, not positive though might be different with different ppl, just my experience

I also get sick when I take too much, or if I take it on an empty stomach.  Vicodin was the one that I abused.

Well, I guess I will go with that, then I hate having to take pain meds. It has been very liberating to get off Vicodin. It's only been 5 days, but I haven't gone this long without it in 13 months. I am also experiencing quite a bit of back and neck pain, so I will get the Darvecet. Hopefully I won't get strung out on that as well.

Darvocets are also addicting so please be very careful and try not to take them on a daily basis.

I also have a hard time taking  Darvocet.   They make me sick if I take more then 2.  But I was heavily addicted to them at one point.  At that time they didn't seem to bother me at all.  Just be careful!!!  And eat before you take them!!!

My sister got a rx for Darvocet yesterday. She was in a car accident 2 years ago and hurt her back and they put screws in it. She has had pain since. The problem is they found alcohol and cocaine in her blood so they don't seem to want to give her anything for the pain. My sister is 57 and I was very surprised about the coke thing but not about the booze. My sister is the Good Daughter in the family so I guess I'm the black sheep. They wanted to give her percocet but she said she thought those made her sick and opted for the darvocet. I was going to post about this today so it came at a good time.

I also suffer from back pain and have had surgery on L5/S1 and C3. A long time ago my family Dr suggested that I alternate between vicodin and darvocet, since they are two differnt types of pain meds. I did not get the relief from darvocet and took vicodin, for 7 years, until last Friday. Since then I have not taken anything stronger than naproxen, no it doesn't help much but it'll make my family Dr happy. I have been working with a Dr that does acupuncture and it is helping.

Thanks for your post...I fell and damaged my spine - from neck to tailbone in 2001. When I take only Tylenol or Motrin, I get so stiff I can't turn my head to the right or use my right arm without serious pain. I also get lower back pain. I have tried Naproxen (Aleve) and that makes me sick to my stomach. I don't want to take anything, but I need something. I am trying to figure out what the best solution is - I don't want to be strung out on codiene ever again. I am willing to try acupuncture but not a chiropractor, I don't care what anybody says about what they can do. Everyone I know of that has ever seen one is just as strung out on that as I am on Vocdin....LOL

After my first accident, almost 11 years ago, the doc gave me darvocet.  After a couple of months what the doc Rx'ed was not enough, so I got more elsewhere.  Was up to 4-6 at a time, 4-6 times a day, something like 30/day.  this went on for over 2 years. I quit a month before my surgery, fusion of c5, c6, c7.
Darvocet are very addicting, just not as compelling as hydrocodone, but addictive nonetheless.

yes you can get high on darvs. Ive used them lots of times. Certainly not my DOC , but they were a fine substitue when I couldnt get my Vicodin. So dont let your guard down and think you wont get hooked on them just because they are a weaker drug. Like the others stated, they tend to make you pukey if you take too many (although ALL narcs have done that to me if i took too high of a dose. i have a sensitive stomach and never could take more than 2 and half Vics at one time ever. that was my limit but strangely even after my tolerance to them built, Id still get a little high at the same dose. )  ANYHOW, I am getting wayyyyyyy off the main topic here, lol.  Use them sparingly as much as possible. I do understand your predicament. I have a very bad back too along with other chronic pain issues too.

My personal experience is just the opposite.  Motrin works 10 times better for me than darvocet. Maybe you could try the motrin first and if it doesn't help go with the darvocet. Hope something helps relieve your pain.  Mary

Shelly ask your doctor about Lidoderm patches as well for the pain. Some people have alot of luck with them.
