What is the world coming to?

I am reading our local newspaper and I am just shocked at all the kids who are in the arrest section for DUI, posession of marijuana, and posession of a controlled substance.  I am not talking about 20 year olds, I am talking about 16 year olds.  It breaks my heart because we are the ones these kids look to for life lessons.  I know not all of them follow what they see and some are going to try things no matter what or how they are raised.  I guess I am feeling guilty because of my past and what I might have led someone to believe is acceptable behavior.  It  breaks my heart because these kids should be in the newspaper for hitting a home run at the local baseball game or for having the honor roll in school.  Not being arrested.

Either way, it really opened my eyes and I hope that from now on I am able to be a positive roll model for the kids I encounter on a daily basis.

Have a Good one
Susan

I guess there are both good kids and bad ones in every area.  Unforunately in my small community, people tend to focus more on the negative than the positive.

Thanks for all he comments guys.

you are not the only one that notices this. i am still off and on the streets. and as an ex gang banger, i know all too well the influence we have over our youth. i see 12 year olds slingin dope to buy earings. i see 25 year old fathers let their kids play with their pistols and wear gang colors. i have to say , i only got my kids out in time that they will never remember all the silly **** that they have seen. yeah, its sad, but the only way it will ever change is with education, and parents being parents again.

I know my son is one of those kids that use marijuana and expiriment with prescription pills and it breaks my heart I don't know what to do with him he dosen't think he has a problem at all, he is 17 1/2 yrs old and wasting his life.
I haven't heard from him in two days and I really feel better when he is not around than when he is, I know is sad but that is how I feel.
And we can't blame the parents because I have to say that we never show him anything about drugs or anything like that my problem with painpills started 3 yrs ago and I started abusing 2 yrs ago and nobody knew till 8months ago.

hey desperate, I would love to have a braggin board.  I try not to do too much braggin, but I am so proud of my daughter.  She is a junior in high school and currently has a 4.3 GPA (due to honor classes).  She is ranked 3rd out of 640 students in the high school.  She is also the current America's Junior Miss for our area, and was just named to the High School Softball Team All-District players.  She also returned a few weeks ago froma mission trip in Mexico and is leading a Bible study for her youth group.  I am so proud of her.

I am proud of both of my children.  The youngest is currently being homeschooled with a Christian based homeschool program.  She also is a softball player and has followed in her big sister's footsteps by beginning a Bible Study for the 11 and 12 year olds at our church.  It is very seldom that I don't have atleast 3 or 4 extra kids hanging around our house and the pool.  Oh well, I am not going to complain, I would much rather them be here than elsewhere.

I ama VERY lucky mother.

You know in one way it's like you want to say....if you only knew what these kids came from and they are so good now. The one that had the son I worried about...we lost contact for years...but I was so worried about how he would be as a teenage. We have recently reconnected and he turned 16 and is such a good kid. I kept saying WOW he's so good....WOW he is such a good kid...that I realized it was almost getting insulting... but nobody really knows what he went through as a small child....he probably doesn't remember much (i hope).

Yes, nobody talks about the good kids or the positive stuff. Our town does a Cool School during the school year and focus each week on a school and daily on a kid. I think that's awesome to acknowledge the good kids on the news as well!

coco.....you have a good point and my oldest daughter actually made the front page of our local newspaper when she was in the 8th grade. It was called "Against All Odds", and it talked about all the activities that she is in, yet she has parents that are young, I got pregnant at 16, we are not wealthy by any means, etc, yet she does all this stuff in the school and community. It is great when those kids are recognized but you don't see it often. I look back and also think that the paper didn't know she also had another thing against her, both parents were taking narcotics.........

Well Guys,

I am going to post the over side of things.

When I was growing Up (early 70's) everyone was
on drugs.  There was no such thing as DARE.
There where only a few that where not on drugs (Acid, PCP the works)
and they where made fun of.  WE had free love, lets get thinking,
and then in the 80's it was all about Coke.  I'm surprised that I lived
through it.

Today Kids have programs like DARE and MADD.  There are more
kids that are doing Great we just do not hear about them.  Here in
south Florida (miami) all we ever hear about in the News is the Drama, killing
and such.  WE had a teenager that beat a boy to death in the elamentary
school.  The Mom fought and the courts put him on house arrest than
he beat and stole from a pizza deliver man.  Now he sits in prison doing
Life and he's complaining that it's not fair.

So I see your point but at least now kids have more positive programs
and more people are taliking about Recovery, so if kids get into trouble
they know where to go.

I agree with you Joann, I feel tremendous guilt for the times I lost with my girls.  Thank Goodness, it wasn't for as long as some of the others on here, but regardless, it was lost time.  I just thank the Lord that I woke up from that haze and realized what I was doing to myself and the ones I loved before it was too late.  I guess the only thing we can do now is to move on and be positive role models from this point on.  For the longest time, I would hid the fact that I was on this website.  I would close it whenever my hubby or kids came in the room.  Now I realize that doesn't help anything but keep my life a mystery and in the dark.  Now I really don't care who sees me on here and I am proud of the progress I have made.  I hope my children and others learn from my mistakes and sees that addiction can happen to all people.  When I was younger, it was just the "trashy" people from the wrong side of town who did it.  I now see that it happens in just about every family, some are just able to handle it finacially better than others.  Well, I have rambled on again. I have to go and get in the bath so I can go pick up the cat at the vet.  I will talk to you guys later.

Love

Susan, we have the same thing in our paper also. My daughter who is going to the tenth grade says that kids steal pills from their parents and sell them at school and there are some in school that have their own prescription for Vic's!! How does that happen? I am not talking about someone breaking their arm and getting a few, I am talking about someone who has been getting them for months now?!?!?! It is very disheartening!

Susan...I totally understand the major guilt on what I may have led someone to think is acceptable as well. My friends had their kids in high school and we just toted those poor babies around with us and didn't think a thing about it.... they saw alot. I have felt immense guilt for it for years now... one of them (the one I didn't think would turn out so great) is a great kid...no drugs, drinking anything...good kid. The other one...well, to sad to talk about at her age.

We read the paper and they get younger and younger. We have a CHILD in our state in elementary school that has to wear a monitoring bracelet....he was stealing cars. That wasn't even his first offense.

It is sad...all I can do is pray about it and hope for the best!
