What vitamins worked best for wd?

OK so I have made it 48 hours without anything uless you count the valiums and xanex but they really help the non sleeping part.
I think I can actaullly venture to the vitamin store.  I treid the thomas one when I came out OC three years ago, did not notice a lot but I was sicker tahn crap.  So I am just taperered to vics10mg for the last week and besides no appitate achy, no energy and bad tummy  I am alive.  So what should I get I see people say amnio acids but I could not find at walmart and try and find a person there to help ahhhh and in this condition not pretty.  Does l-Tyrosine help with energy?  I am a bad sleeper so I do not want to screw myself.
I am eating a bowl of rice crispies, light at the end of the tunnell!!

I have also seen reports of people reporting success with GABA.  I did some self-experimentation with mega dosing when I came off tramadol & unfortunately it did nothing for me.

Hard to know whether its placebo effect or if it crosses the BBB more easily in some people.  It makes sense in evolutionary terms that it wouldn't go straight to the brain as too much GABA equals coma & worse.

The L-glutamine also requires a bit of self experimentation as in some people, it can result in too much glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter.  I found that more than 2000 mgs gave me the jitters.

Hey you are right.  I didn't know GABA doesn't cross the blood brain barrier.  But I did find some people who found it does cross a little bit in higher doses... or if the blood brain barrier is compromised.

And yup... so I just read here for GABA deficiency from anti anxiety drug use.

L-Glutamine upto 3500 mg 3 times daily and L-Taurine upto 1000 mg 3 times daily.

GABA doesn't cross the blood brain barrier.  You can take precursors for GABA such as l-glutamine or taurine (amino acids) or herbs that act on the GABA receptors such as valerian or kava but don't start anything until you have tapered off the valium & xanax.

L-tyrosine can help with energy but take it in the morning as others have said can make you feel jiggy, (as in jump out of your skin, rather than the Will Smith sense).  It's too speedy for me.

Adaptogens like ginseng can help with energy over time.

Okay... So your addiction is pain pills and anti-anxiety medication right?

You don't need to take the L-Tyrosine... L-Tyrosine would be for low dopamine levels which would be the right amino acid to supplement if you were coming off stimulants like any amphetamine, or cocaine.

You don't necessarily need to take 5-HTP unless you are deficient in serotonin.

If I were you I would use 3 mg melatonin quick dissolve strips to help you sleep. That way your body won't have to make the melatonin through serotonin.

Look for GABA supplements.  You will need these because you're hooked on anti-anxiety drugs so you're definitely going to have a GABA deficiency.

For endorphin/enkephalin deficiency such as that caused by pain pills.  Take each of the following 3 times a day.  Take your amino acid supplements on an empty stomach always so your neurons can get them in higher useable concentrations.
-> B-vitamin Capsule
-> Multimineral... Calcium, magnesium should be in it, zinc, and vitamin D helps
-> L-Glutamine, Upto 1000 mg per dose.
-> DL-Phenylalanine Upto 2000mg per dose.
-> L-Leucine Upto 500 mg per dose
-> L-Methionine Upto 500 mg per dose.

This should help ease the withdrawal symptoms and get your brain back in balance in the quickest way possible.

Good point re the quality issue, but without word of mouth its hard to know.  I have always been prepared to spend on supplements but for some reason none of the numerous valerian supps I tried had any effect for me at all & I assumed it was just my biochemistry & gave up.

Recently one of Australia's big pharma companies, (who I would never associate with quality), brought out a line of pure herbs with no fillers.  i decided to give the valerian one more try & at last I get why people find it helpful.

It's still not widely available & may be a test run for the company so I  would much appreciate if you all could post some brands that have worked for u.  Or PM if brand posts are not allowed.

If it's ok to post brands for non drug supplements, i would love to build up a data base for the health pages of member endorsed brands so we could increase the odds that members will find helpful supplements.

What do u think?

It is a very big deal with valerian, and all herbs come that.

Trouble is the highest potency of valerian is in plants grown in their favourite environments, and harvested just after peak growth. A weedy little sick plant may have almost no active alkaloid in it.  The 'cowboy companies' really don't care!

Some companies list the amount of valerian in their product and som the amount of valerian extract, which are two completely different things.  Even the same no of mg of extract can be completely different depending on the quality and sub-species, the climate it was grown in, and what time of year it was harvested.

Personally I buy all my herbs from a licensed medical herbalist. They're much more expensive, but her livelihood depends on supplying the very best products.

Thank all you all for all the great information. I was not able to find a lot at safeway the health food store was just too far for me right now.  So I got my multivitiman, mg, Emrgnc> I have yet to get "jiggy". Since I am still taking a little valium it seems like I should hold off on the 5HTP, but looks like a good idea. I am eating a bit more and improving. Yahoo, I hope this time it lasts.

it is worth a shot,  i agree. As i said i did find that it helped me to go through  those first months when depression is one of the things to appear :) besides, i found that it had no side effects at all and this is a good thing ... no dizziness, no stomach upset, no headaches, ... ( apart from taking the prevention of not mixing with antidepressants).

as you say, there is a problem with all the food supplements relating quality...it is the same with the valerian , i would think...

I agree with you!  Some people find that 5HTP is great, some are disappointed by it. It's still worth a shot.

Here in the UK we've been getting such good results with 5HTP that it's becoming a standard in a number of NHS and private detox units.

Part of the problem is that it's still classed as a food supplement so theres very little manufacturers standardisation. I've seen cheap 'cowboy' versions that contain very little 5HTP with no mention of it's source.

Best results are seen with relatively high doses, manufactured by reputable companies that have obtained it from a certified source. Expensive is usually best unfortunately.

ok, 5htp is a help, just a help , imo...

it is not a magical pill, i would not put too many expectations about its effects as something that do  loads of things... i mean, i really think it helped me during those first months of wds but  not to cheer me up, that's too much, i would say that it helped me not to feel down, and for me that was quite a lot...but it didn't calm me down ....the valerian root helped more  with anxiety here.

just my opinion :)

Valerian is really great for helping you get to sleep.  5HTP does loads of things. It helps with the withdrawals, it cheers you up, it calms you down and it helps you sleep.

If you can't find them at your healthfood shop, they're easily obtained online.  Avoid the cheapest ones, as good quality is best.

Take care

5htp helps sleep for many so they  take it at night..it helped me alot..50-100 mgs.
the others were tyrosine..it helps energy but needs to be used at 2000-3000 mgs a day and not if u r experiencing anxiety...dont take it at night cos i noticed nrg after taking it
valerian root also helped me sleep.  melatonin gave me a hangover in the am but we r all different..tyrosine increases dopamine release/endorphin release
theanine, in true chinese tea or in a good supp helps anxiety without inducing sleepiness.
EmergenC helped me during detox and the C helps alot cos people tend to get sick alot after detox...a good multi if u dont have this
Calcium/magnesium relaxes muscles and is another one I used at night

Hi~

Get a good multi vit. You need extra of everything! Vit C and B's.
Calcim,magnesium and potassium.
Try 5HTP at 50 to 100mg.daily in the morning. Don't take this if you take an antidepressant. 5HTP converts to seratonin and melatonin in the body.
Valerian root and plain melatoin for sleep.
L-tyrosine does help with energy. Start at a low dose and titrate up. Some people get
"jiggy" so see how you feel.

Good luck!  Keep eating and drink a lot of fluids.
