**Why is barbituate cold turkey dangerous?**

**Why is barbituate cold turkey dangerous?**

Hi,

Stupid question time... I have been addicted to pain meds on and off for several years.  Right now I am taking/abusing Lortab 7.5 (ran out of  my percs), and Fioricet with Codeine.  When I can't get the Fioricet with Codeine, I get them without.  In the course of one day, I can take about 15-20 Fioricet.... I hear that if you stop barbituates cold turkey you can have seizures.  Is this really true?  Why?  Is it like an Alchoholic having withdrawals?  I hear it's much more dangerous stopping the barbs than the other opioids...   I would love to stop, but don't want to go into another detox facility.  Should I just do a real gradual weaning?

Thanks all... I appreciate every one of you!!
Lisa

This seems to be getting as controversial as the sub / no sub debate. It is analogous to the alcohol thing.....and a slow steady taper is the way to quit them. Just dont stop a steady dose cold turkey - - probably blown out of proportion somewhat ....... but be safe.....You may want to check out some of the replies on the Addiction Expert Forum from Dr Junig.....this issue has been addressed on his forum. Be safe........
