yeah going off klonopin cold turkey, which i was on at one pt. 4mgs a day and now successfully off completely, just last month, is asking for complete hell. opiate withdrawals makes you feel like you would rather die, but benzo whether its klonopin, xanax, halcion, lorazepam(ativan), etc. is all the same withdrawals effects but instead of feeling like you would rather die, you can actually seize up and die. its the same with severe alcohol withdrawal they both work with the gaba receptors in your brain and stopping it completely after long time use and even with a low dose is asking for absolute disaster. ive never heard of it done. I was tapered down slowly once a month by my therapist. it gave me little to no discomfort. and depending the dose you were on and how long you were on it you have to go real slow and lower the dose little by little. cold turkey is not an option! the symptoms of withdrawal if you taper too fast or run out, start off even though every one is different and has different effects, but what everyone will experience regardless is tremors, possible seizures, extreme muscle cramping, twitching, convulsions, depression, agitation, extreme rebound anxiety and insomnia. if you are on a high dose and have been on it for some time, i was on it for over 10 months, its almost smarter to switch to valium(diazepam), which is long lasting like klonopin, but easier to taper down slowly. klonopin, chemical name clonazepam(generic) is a very potent benzodiazepine, where .25 mgs is equivalent to 10  mgs of diazepam, so it def. is a strong one and hard to get off of completely. if you have any questions about benzo withdrawal, alternatives, or anything else, let me know anytime-christos

The withdrawl (withdrawal) is a very slow and depends on the dosage you are currently taking.  Stopping cold turkey can cause seizures and kill you.  Do this carefully and under a doctor's care (or at least someone who knows what they are doing).  Let me know if you need/want help!
Here for you,
Deanna

I have been on Clonazepam for 2 years, now up to a dosage of 1.5 to 2 mg per day.  In addition, I have been prescribed 10mg of Ambien. I have a history of addiction and am amazed that this stuff was prescribed for me in the first place.  I have learned quite a lesson in the last few days...starting with my psych telling me "You're addicted!"  I know it's not a time to look back, but why didn't someone tell me this stuff is addictive when they put me on it in the first place?  Especially considering my history????? Now all I want is to be off this stuff, either replacing it with something that is non-addictive or something natural/herbal. I am dumping my current psych and luckily my therapist has recommended a psych that is also an addictionologist.  I am hoping I can get thru this without experiencing all of the awful side effects I hear about.  I'm really scared.

You NEED to be medically supervised while w/d from Klonopin.  w/d from Benzo's can cause seizures and it is VERY important to w/d with a dr,'s help and to do it very slowly.
